Engine Removal E300 TD

Hi,
I am trying to remove the engine and would like to know if it is possible to separate the engine from the gearbox and leave the gearbox in position in the car. Or do the two units engine and gearbox have to be removed as one unit at the same time.
Any help much appreciated. Mike
