Engine Sounds Loud, But Only in Cabin

02 Lancer ES Automatic 55,000 miles
Just bought it. Was lovely and quiet. Everything has been checked out. Car is solid and like new. Rarely driven by previous owner. Now, suddenly the engine sounds extremely loud, but oddly only in the cabin. No noise when outside the car. Super quiet when idling, but gets loud when accelerating. Sounds like it has something much bigger than an inline 4 2.0 liter under the hood. I have confirmed that is not so :)
