as usual Ive started another one before finishing my current project... :shakehead:iceslolan

mazda rx3 race model from fujimi
i love the 70's touring cars, especially the jap stuff with the huge over fenders etc

so heres what ive done.....

step one was cut out for the over fenders.

boot lid (trunk) was very badly molded. needed a fair bit of filling, i've also filled the two holes for the number plate, i have no intention of using that!

also modified interior.
as usual the kit comes with a rear seat, which i dont want.

cut out rear seat and fitted with styrene sheet.
I adapted standard rear parcel shelf.
also extended transmission tunnel.

on the list to do next....



work out if i will fit bumpers or not, some did some didn't by looking at historic pictures. As i am not replicating any car in particular, i will do whatever gets the look i am after.
what color to paint it, and if the over fenders will be body color as i will paint separately before i fit fenders if i do go for a different color fender.....
build roll cage

still working out what exterior will look like but heres the base sticker kit ill be using that did come with the kit.
pretty simple white stripes, numbers and period correct 'MAZDA' decals..... its a good start.

that looks like a good project racer1, nice paint job on that one.
did you buy a fujimi or hasagawa kit?

i have primed mine and ready to paint the body soon.

i'm thinking of doing a two tone color, that is, white, red or yellow body with black over fenders, front lip etc.
but really i am still deciding.
i really want to do one with black over fenders, as it seems to be common on these cars, but also this model coming with separate parts for the fenders it will look really clean being able to paint these over fenders separately rather than trying to mask as ive done in the past (fujimi pgc110 skyline-which had flares molded into the body shell)
hence if i do them a different colour it will have really clean lines.

i have also collected a few old type sponsor stickers to add to the car.

next job is to detail the suspension parts.

be careful with the decals, my fujimi kit decals were quite fragile in my kit. i just tested them.

thats a great idea with the engine, i wish i didnt sell my tamiya rx-7 from my stash so i could have used that as a donor engine....oh well.

i kinda like the raw racing look without the bumpers, so ill paint it all and decide at the final stages.

...oh, it looks like it will be painted yellow. i was going to go with white but i really want to use the decal kit (white stripes) so it'll be either yellow or red.

I have always liked the look of this one and would certainly do it if i could get the kit at the right price.

yes it was all in the kit.
you must get the 'race model' kit from fujimi that has a red rx-3, fitted with the fenders etc on the box.

for this for anyone else watching, ive been very bust lately but will get back into it soon.

they can be disappointing but this is a cool kit anyway

i'll be painting the body again, the clear killed it.
same happened to another model that i had painted with the same paint.
no idea why ive been using these paints for years and never had any problems at all.
oh well, i'll post again once ive bought a new paint!

with the delay on the body, i did more work to the rest of the car.
The chassis/interior are all basically done,just need to do any weathering and detail work.

i also painted the tail lights which were a bit of a challenge.
they are just 1 molded clear piece that includes not only the tail light lens, but also the black surround and chrome trim.

so i first painted the lens color, then the black surround.
Next was the chrome trim around the lens, it is raised so i was able to paint only the raised part.
i used gunze sangyo mr metal aluminuim (my favorite by far by the way!)
the trick though was to let the paint almost dry and the use the edge of a brush to only apply it to the highest point of the trim, thus avoiding any paint running down onto the lens or black surround.
the mr metal aluminum made this possible as it does not form a skin on the surface as it dries, ive tried it with other paints and it just drags lumps around, not just depositing fine amounts like the mr metal does, its great stuff!
at least something has gone well :tongue:

the interior is quite simple, but this isn't supposed to be the most detailed work of art, to be honest the exterior is more important to me.
really only got to do a harness, currently investigating 70's style harnesses as id like to keep it time period correct if i can....

It's a shame the paint cracked. I've had it happen to me once and I think I didn't prep the body right, but it happened on the colour coat. It's now sitting in a box lol

yeah its a pain,
last time it happened to me i found out why, but this paint combo has been a proven formula for me for a long time. :confused:

now i dont know if i can trust it again or not...

anyway, its all stripped and re-primed now, ready for paint again.
im trying a new paint this time :biggrin:

chequer plate foot well (from crazy modeler i think), scratch hand brake leaver as i removed the original center console.
i had a 70's race seat but it didnt fit so i just stuck with the original.

bit of an update,
Similar to my corolla project, i applied some foil for chrome strips to this one, first time ive used this and i was impressed.
bit of semigloss black detailing done too.

bit more was used on the rx3 than the corolla, windows and grille.

the Tires are so big they make it look like a cartoon car
If they were just a little less obtrusive it would fit better don't you think
Still - great work on the BMF - I've never been able to use that stuff correctly

yes true but i think thats part of its charm, those crazy race cars in japan in the 1970's were all about wide wheels and big over fenders, their form followed function and thats what i like about them :grinyes:

i think i could have lowered the rear a little bit but im not too fused, its good enough for me.

and thanks, this was the first time ive used mr.colour lacquers and ill never go back to anything else.
didnt even need to polish to get that finish :)

It's a wonder that little 2 rotor wankle could turn tires that big -
the pic from the back looking at the big tires under that car remind me of a "pro-stock" drag car - lol
anyhow not criticizing GTRfan - just thoughts

Yeah they may not be exactly the correct width!
I have a feeling fujimi tend to use parts for one model and adapt it for another, ive noticed alot of others have the exact same over fender kit for example, may be tge same for the wheels

rx4's are great, its a pitty all the old rx's are so rare these days
we had an rx4 in the family too back in the 90's, I love the 70's shaped jap cars with their slight american influence in the styling.
.....I wish they did an rx4 1/24 now!
