what would you recommend.

I have a 99 CV with 160k a auction special. Runs great, I'd like to change plugs, wires, oil/filter, sparks, tranni fluid, fuel filter. My mechanic at work sez the gasket on the tranni pan doesn't have to be replaced on some models. He works on these cars all day and knows every nut and bolt.

I just want to know what is best for this car. Any suggests, thoughts?
sparks-Bosch, NGK, double platt-autolites?
Oil-castro/ pennz, etc. ?
oil filter? clueless
tranni fluid? clueless

spark plug wires, I'd like to put on new ones because the ones I've notice look like thin wire, what is the best plug wires for these cars..

Does this have coil packs with wires, or does it use COP (coil over plug)? If it uses wires, use what is recommended for the car. Bosch are alright.

Spark plugs: NGK / AC Delco / Bosch. Motorcraft good also. Stay away from Autolite.

Oil: Use Castrol if you want to use dino oil, or use Mobil 1 synthetic. Use what is recommeded for the car - do not use anything with a viscosity higher than 5w30 as this engine is designed for this grade and anything higher may starve the valvetrain. It can also damage the timing chain 'train'. The Modular engine is an interesting beast. _NEVER_ use Pennzoil in ANYTHING that you care about.

Filter: Motorcraft, Purolator or WIX. Nothing else.

Trans fluid for this will be the old Dexron-III (no longer available under this name due to trademark rule - GM owns the trademark). Mercon V is the Ford / Motorcraft version. This vehicle will NOT use synthetic. Look for 'Dex-Merc' in auto part stores. Do NOT mix and match transmission fluid - use ONLY what your vehicle was designed for. I'm not sure about the coil pack? It just looks like wires, I've never seen these before, used to thick rubber connectors. I do appreciate silicon212 all the info and thanks for the chart.

Oh one more thing, I have this strange clicking sound when I do a U turn. Sounds like it's coming from the front tire area under the car, I was told there are no axles on the front of these cars, boots? Are you familiar with this? Me mum sez, who has a 97, that its the farthest the wheel turns so it clicks because you turned it to the end which causes this noise. That's a 83 yr old's theory.. 8)

Tires are a personal thing and it depends on how much you want to spend. My Police Interceptor has Goodyear Eagle RSA Plus tires on it and they're actually very good tires. They're also about $150-ish a pop.

Falken tires are pretty good as are Kumho.

I have a 99 Continental. It has the 4.6 in it as well although it is front wheel drive. I have found that the only oil filter to use is Motorcraft. They have a silicone check valve so you don't get oil drain back. All the other oil filters I have tried gave me that dry start that you can hear.
I had very good results with Hankook Optimo H727 tires. I wanted a tire that was good in the snow, good in the rain, and still had a luxury ride. I have 50,000 miles on them and still have a lot or tread left. Reviewed in Consumer Reports July 2010.

well these guys hooked me up with Arizonian silver edition, a cheap tire but not to shabby. Considering I had 3 wasted goodyear's and 1 good firestone, it rides more smoother. Was gonna get Falken but they said the ones I got were more for cruisers.

The Arizonian is a house brand for Discount. It's a good general use tire - I've used them before with success - but it's not the best performing tire. I've found that the rated lifetime of the tire is inversely proportionate to its performance in handling situations - in other words, the tires with more grip tend to be the ones that have lower expected treadlife.

For me, living in the Arizona heat, treadlife isn't something that's an issue - it's the heat and what it does with the tires. I'll go for something grippy before I go for something with long life - to me it's a safety issue as well as a performance issue. I've never worn out a set of tires - they all fail due to heat / stress / cracking and separation. I keep them meticulously maintained, in case you're wondering about that. When they show signs of deep sidewall cracking, off they come - and usually they still have a bit of treadlife left. It's just that no tire likes the heat.

Well I got the impression it was a discount tire, I live in the same heat you do so I understand.
My mechanic at work was explaining to me about the transmission.
He said some models you can drain the tranni fluid with the oil, then there's some who have this sealed in the middle of the tranni unit a round thing (he showed me the part) which stores the fluid which you have to take to a specialist to take out the transmission in order to get to this part..:eek7: which to me sounds costly.

So he said to try to find out which type I have in that car, he says that cop car inter's have the regular drain with oil deal. Is this true about the regular 99 crown vic that the transmission service is a big pain in the ass.
