Open glove box = blow radio fuse

Yup. Sounds ridiculous, but that's what it does.

2004 Yukon XL Denali; 88,000 miles; all the options.

Problem started last year after having a U-Haul tech set up a trailer to tow with a 7 pin to 4 pin adapter. I have no idea if it is related, but the radio fuse has been blowing for seemingly no reason. BUT THEN....about a week ago my wife opened the glove box and the fuse blew. Hmmm? A few days ago I forgot about her discovery, opened the glove box to check papers, fuse blew. The key was not on, and the radio was off. ????? When I started the Yuk later, the radio fuse was blown.

SO, if the glove box light or switch is causing the problem....WHY? There is no relationship between the two that I can see. There is a power amp and XM Satellite unit up behind the glove box, but it has not worked since I bought the vehicle several years ago because some moron tried to pull the antenna cable out and ripped the end off it. The radio has worked fine until last year.

What does one have to do with the other? Do I have to pull all the glove box crap out to get at the wiring back there??? Again, why would opening the box blow the fuse to the radio?

at what point does the fuse blow when opening? immediate or after all the way down? You may have some bare wires that get shorted to ground once you open the glove box fully.

I can't remember for sure but i think the glove box lights and radio are all on the same CTSY fuse. So if there's a short in the switch or light, it'll blow the whole thing....

I tested it today, and the fuse blew the instant the glove box door was moved. When the latch was operated, the radio stayed on. But all it took was less than 1/8" of movement of the door and the fuse blew.

I can not find any light in the box, and I checked my 05 Suburban that is almost identical, and it does not have a light either. They could be both burned out I suppose. I have not found any wiring diagrams that show a switch or light in the box.

The circuitry I see in the radio schematics does not show a link between the radio and the glove box. Maybe I'm missing something.

There are other radio-related components way up behind the box and under the dash. I would guess that something from the box is causing a powered wire to short out, but I sure don't know where. I guess the next step is to unbolt the glove box and remove it. :(

these forums will not are not going to help you. you should have a glove box light. you must open this all up and find out what was done that caused this. this is not a problem made with the OEM wiring design but some HALF AZZ wiring done by some idiot. since moving the glove box door causes this it is not a big deal to find ..but your gonna have to remove stuff to see how the wiring is being shorted out..

never ever use a larger size fuse...that can cost you a lot more damage.
