Trumpeter 1/12 Scale GT40

Finally.... after a long period of time, it's finished. (I apologize if it's too many pics)

This is Trumpeter's 1/12th scale GT40 kit built as GT40 chassis # XGT2 as raced in Lemans 1966. The build is only a resemblance of XGT2 with quite a bit of artistic license using mostly pics from the restored car and trying to make it look somewhat original and lightly raced. This GT40 has always been one of my favorite versions of the car. I'm not going to go into the issues with the Trumpeter kit since that's all been discussed many times over.

This build includes portions of the KA Super Detail set, ICON Automotive's awesome replacement tires, many scratch built items and other bits-n-pieces, the under door "FORD" stripe decal is from Best Balsa Kits and the rest of the decals were designed by a friend of mine (Rob) and printed on an ALPS printer by another friend (Wayne).

Painted with Tamiya TS-17 Gloss Aluminum, U-POL Clear, Krylon True Blue decanted and sprayed for the chassis and the black stripes over the roof and tail are painted on.

Historically accurate or not, that is AWESOME!

That looks great.

The only thing I noticed (and I have no idea why it seemed to stick out) is that the exhaust pipe welds look more like something I would weld than what a professional welder would do.

That's being pretty dam* picky though. :-)

WOW! That is one impressive model. The GT40 has got to be one of my all time favorites (I even got a ride around Road America in #1046, the '66 LM winner)!!!! Heard of all the problems with the kit so never gave a thought to buying one, I may have to change my mind after seeing yours!

Great looking model. I always thought this car would be one on the best looking as a model. G. Hill probably thought he could win Lemans with this MK11 but bad luck prevailed. He had to wait until 1972 with his Matra 670 to be the only man to win Lemans, Indy and the F1 championship along with Monaco several times.
