Built this one earlier this year for an expanded review that is in the June, 2014 issue of Scale Auto Magazine.

I painted it TS-16 yellow & black, wheels are a mixture of Alclad Magnesium & Stainless. Seats are painted a tobacco color that I still had from my Carrera GT build.

I used the optional photoetch set and carbon decals. The decals go on nicely, though you'll have to apply gloss clear and matte clear to them depending on where they go for an authentic finish. A lot of time was spent on the interior decals, where you end up barely seeing 10% of them :crying:

Fun kit to build, though I'll admit I hate doing tons of decals...if it were just for me, I'd have foregone the carbon decals. I've seen the Revell kit, look forward to building it. It is nearly as detailed as the Tamiya kit, and maybe has a bit more detail under the engine cover.

Looks beautiful! I have been tempted to get this kit. You did a wonderful job on it. Were the doors and engine cover hard to get fitted?

Superb! I have to admit I was somewhat ambivalent toward this kit - until now. Now I feel I must build one to go alongside my Enzo.

Any chance to see more pictures of the interior??

Engine cover is very easy to fit and open/close, doors easy to fit, but a bit difficult to open and hold open and then close again. They have a notch in the upper hinge to help hold them open.

I saw the Revell LaFerrari built up and parts on Saturday, it's really nice as well. No opening doors, but more engine detail seemingly than Tamiya. Here in the US the MSRP is about 1/4 the Tamiya price.

Very nice model as always! I like the color you used for the seats. But I don't like the Tamiya carbon decals, to me they don't look anything like real carbonfiber.

What's the secret to the tabacco color?

in the way that the Revell Enzo had some better details in the engine bay (like the oil reservoirs for instance) or more detail in general?

Trevor

It's the leftover "Ascot Brown" that I used for my 1/12 Carrera GT build.

You mix 3 Tamiya acrylic colors:

XF-3 Flat Yellow
XF-7 Flat Red
XF-9 Hull Red

XF-3 : 2 parts + XF-7 : 1 part + XF-9 : 4 parts

It's a great color! I overcoated with semigloss clear for the leather sheen.

I saw hoses/wiring on the right side of the engine compartment that isn't on the Tamiya kit. Not having them side-by-side, that's what I noticed. It looked very "complete" for a basic kit.

Aside from a lack of opening doors, and a slightly more basic chassis pan, it looked very detailed. Nice wheel & brake detail, you could barely make out the usual "brakes mounted between wheel rim halves". Tires do have markings. Of course actually building it will be the true test, but for 1/4 the Tamiya price, it's going to be fairly popular.

The buildup didn't have any mesh in the rear fascia; not sure how they'll do that, probably vinyl material. Tamiya's basic kit gives you the awful decal-on-clear if you don't use the optional photoetch.

Nice job Bob! So, did Tamiya not provide decals for the outside of the monocoque, like on the exterior side of the sills, which are visible when the doors are open?

I agree with you...all this carbon fiber on supercars these days creates a pain in the arse for us modelers.

Those decals are included, I was mega-tired when trying to apply and gave up, they have to wrap around from top to bottom. It was easier just to paint :uhoh:

I would have enjoyed this build 10,000 times more if I hadn't bothered w/the carbon decals. Decals and I don't get along very well

it's good to hear.
what's the body moulding like?
the most recent new Revell kit I've built was the 599 that was much improved from the 360 and Enzo but I do have an R8 kit somewhere and I remember it having much better body shape with nicer sharp body lines compared to the soft blob that was the 360 (admittedly the worst of them all it seems...).

It looks fine. It's time to put their past effort into the rear view mirror, their quality seems to be quite good.

The only unknown at this point is if it suffers the usual amount of parts warpage due to poor mold cycling/packing and thin, nearly dead-flat chassis pans. Warped parts seem to be an epidemic w/Revell AG models. Instead of freaking out, ordering new parts, complaining bitterly, I find that it's pretty easy to massage the offending parts back to shape w/my own hands. The plastic usually is soft enough to allow a bit of manhandling.

Revell USA already has this kit listed as a release, we may not even get the Revell AG packaged kit. Which is fine with me, I've always :lol2: at the crazy mismatched colors the bodies are molded in for the Euro market

Nice work indeed. Good to hear there's a more affordable option. I wonder if Scale Motorsport will make a super detail kit. I'm gonna hold off until there are more aftermarket items for it. Unless I finish my other projects first of course =)
