I used Squadron Green Putty and it was horrible.

I now use Bondo red putty.. it's cheap and work really great.. not good for molding something, but for fill crack it's perfect... oh, and did I tell you it was cheap ? :iceslolan

The squadron white puddy is crap but its all I have. What puddy should I buy and use to fill the gap in my Aristo Front Bumper and make the custom hood fit perfactly on my third ITR?

i find that milliput is too crumbly...tamiya poly is good stuff, imo the best for modding. :bananadie

I used the squadron junk for a while, it worked alot better when I started thinning the putty w/ acetone(? maybe it was alcohol). Basically, the putty was almost brushed on w/ an old brush. But now, it is tamiya only.

I used tamiya's, humbol's, and Mori Mori's, but I prefer Alteco SSP-HG two part putty! Great stuff!

I use Dyna Tron Dyna de-lite. It's a gold colored 2-part filler made by the Bondo people. It has a much finer grain than regular Bondo - nad it's available from the local AutoZone. They make a 2 part glazing putty too - I think it's called Putty Cote, that I would love to find, it's the stuff Bill Geary uses!

The glazing and spot putty (orange tube) is okay, but it shrinks a lot! I like using it on diecast bodies though - just toss it in the oven before work and the pilot light cures it rock hard by the time I get home!

Never had any luck with Squadron, no matter how many times I tried it, lol.

I tried Squadron green, but it sucks to me!

So I mainly use Bondo Spot and glazing (same as Testors red, but cheaper) and Tamiya 2-part epoxy.

I hope to get my hands on some Tamiya polyester and Mori mori putty as well!

the difference between the 2 is that Epoxy is a 2 part 50:50 putty, and Polyester is a 2 part 1:10 putty. Epoxy putty has a clay like consistency which is good for scluping but cures really hard making it difficult to carve. Polyester putty on the other has a toothpaste like consistency and doesnt cure as hard which is eaier to carve.

as for me i like to use SSP-HG the most, it cures instantly and is still workable, i also like to use Tamiya's Polyester putty sometimes. regular type of putties arent suited for scratch building such large pieces, they shrink too much. you should be using either Epoxy or Polyester putties which have low shrinkage.

Wow, and I've prototyped entire bodies with Bondo! Carves nicely, but it don't like being dropped.....oops.

There is more to the difference between polyester putty and epoxy, but I don't think a chemistry lesson was what you were asking for:biggrin:

Isn't it funny how some of us swear by what others swear at? There really is no ONE way to do something! I love it!

I love my superfine milliput. I make the "skeleton" of my scratchbuilds out of styrene and/or milliput and then fill in and smooth with squadron white. I have a big can of bondo from some body work i did on my 1:1 Jeep, but I lost the little tube of hardener :swear:

Ibaneezer, you can get a tibe of hardener for the Bondo for about a buck fifty. Regular Bondo may not be great for scale bodywork (the grain is a bit rough and porous), but it makes a good "underlayment". I tend to use a lot of filler primer over the "regular 'ol bondo", and then wet sand it.....and wet sand it....and sand it a bit more.

It's good for at least one reason though, it's cheap and available!
