'98 Regal LS.

The car was parked with the engine running, and the doors locked spontaneously. Starting then, noticed that the fuel gauge and coolant temp gauge were pegged out.

Short somewhere? Could a bad BCM cause this?

How did you get in the car? Did the car run until it ran out of gas?

Have seen this happen, when you disconnect/reconnect the battery with the key in the "run" position.....

one of the windows was open, got back into the car that way. Unaware of any instances where battery was reconnected with the key in the run position.

I've heard of people unhooking both battery cables and touching them together. Does this reset the PCM or BCM?

Yes, disconnecting both cables(neg first), and holding them together for a minute is a reset procedure....make sure the key is not in the ignition when doing this......reconnect the cables(pos first)....

When you say pinned, is the needle stuck on the other side of the limit pin?
