'02Camry wiper motor

The wipers on my Camry windshield are making a scraping sound as they sweep.
I replaced the factory motor & transmission four years ago with one from a wreck. Working fine til now. How can I deduce it's the motor and not the trans - or the other way around. I did remove the complete unit and oiled it up. The problem remains. The motor hums nicely. The transmission arms do not rotate easily by hand.
I'd go for a new unit from a dealer, but I'm not one of the Saudi royal family. Any advice will be much appreciated, especially from a Toyota maven.

I would guess that if it made the scraping sound only when the blades are moving it's the transmission. If they make any sound at all at the beginning and end of the stroke when they're still, it's the motor.
Just a guess.

PB Blaster, or disassembled and wire-brushed; or both, maybe?

It would depend on what kind and material the bearings/bushings were. If they are soft like nylon bushings and were squished or damaged, then nothing will help, other than replacing them. If they are bronze and dry, then cleaning and lubing them will help. If they are ball bearings (doubt it), then cleaning and lubing them may or may not help, depending on what is wrong with them.
You should check the linkage for binding and lack of smooth running. There may be an obvious problem you can straighten or lube.

Forgot to offer some gratitude for your help before, Brian. Apologies.....
I bought a new wiper mechanism online. Not a bad item for 60 bucks.
I'm sure that somehow I botched the installation.
The wiper motor whizzes away, but the wipers do not move.
I've removed the thing twice and tightened the little nut at the bottom of the
whole spidery contraption, but it
unscrews itself and drops into the drip tray in front of the windshield.
I'm confident there's an important piece missing, not including the one between my earphones.
