Couldn't wait any longer and started my first build of new Aoshima kit. Plan is to build it pretty much OOB with
addition of PE set and after market livery decals. FIA 1997 Gulf livery car is the target.

Just started my usual dry fit assembly. Overall impressions are very positive. I'm quite impressed by the level of
engineering and detail level. Especially engine detail. It looks very good and pretty accurate. Cockpit has great
level of detail as well. Casting quality is very good and very little clean up, beside removal of usual mold seam lines
is needed. Injection pin marks are generally placed in hidden areas and only small number of them will need a fill
ins. Brakes are a weak point and suspension is a bit compromised, but they won't be very prominent on completed
model.

Fit is very good and in some instances I couldn't immediately understand why parts just click into their places and
align properly. Design is very clever. Most of the parts hold together well on dry fit just by virtue of tabs and pins
on parts. Haven't gotten to body parts yet, but I expect fit will great there as well. That will be next step.

I think in terms of engineering level, fit level and detail level this kit is very close to best Tamiya 1/24 scale kits.
Don't know about over all accuracy yet, but it has been good fun assembling it so far.

Besides mentioned weak brakes, one of the things bothering me a bit is the quality of plastic. It feels different from
those types used by Tamiya and Fujimi. Seems to be lower quality. Hopefully it won't affect end result.

PE set is a bit unusual and is more like extra detail set. Beside actual PE items, it contains small number of CF decals,
wires to simulate electrical cables and seat belt fabric. Not too many PE parts are included, but they are still a good
addition to what is already a well detailed kit, imho.

Here are some photos to show progress so far.

Aoshima really stepped up their game with this kit, this was just going to be a basic kit with a "part engine" but after they got so much interest they decided to go all out, So glad they did, looks fantastic! Cant wait to get one!!!

More progress on test fit assembly. Nothing is glued on or permanently attached yet. I'm very impressed with the fit of parts overall.
Doors do not fit 100% likely because of thin plastic at their tops. But rest fits very well together. Body just clicks in place and leaves no
visible seems. Fit of windows is really amazing and they are quite thin for a plastic kit. Beside error with from gills and weak brakes, I
have no other issues to point my finger to. Aoshima has done really great job.

Do you mean sell the components separately, or mold it separate? The one piece is seperate.

I think he refers to the electronic boxes at the back of the tub, which are, if I'm not mistaken, molded integral with the tub floor? Makes painting and detailing them a nightmare..

I think what bradfordian is talking about is the control boxes on the passenger seat. If you want to add wires, you have to cut those boxes out, otherwise you can't drill holes from sideways. I guess you can do the same trick as you would with Fujimi's molded-in seat bottom, where you cut the whole floor, fill the opening with a plastic sheet, then put the removed part back.

Is this the Black Car as Boxart-Version
http://scaleautofactory.com/mclarenf1/aoshima/boxart_01.jpg
or the orange 'Oversee'-Version?
http://scaleautofactory.com/mclarenf1/aoshima/boxart_02.jpg
I have the Kit ordered by AmiAmi in Japan with the 'Black Car' on the Cover of the Box.
This Kit does not contain the LeMans-Front-Lights!

The Sprues 1 and 3 from the top of the picture are not in Kit.
Also the Cover are missing:

I'm could not find any information, if the 'Oversee'-Version has the additional LeMans-Lights.

All my kits are black car box Japanese edition kits. No parts for head lights from LeMans :( First one I'm building
will be car from FIA championship and kit head lights are ok for that. But rest I planned to do as cars from LeMans.
So, will have to source proper parts from somewhere. I was quite surprised and puzzled by absence of those parts.
They were clearly shown on photos of sample, I fully expected for them to be included. Really curious why Aoshima
decided to not included them.

I would also be interested to find out what are the differences in export version of the kit, beside SMS CF decals.

hirofkd

Photos were deceiving, and I also thought the Presentation version would include the Le Mans head light.

Aoshima just announced that the 1997 Le Mans LARK livery is coming out early summer, and apparently it's Aoshima's first kit to include Cartograf decals.
(Murcielago R-SV 2010 Spa Winner will also feature Cartograf decals.)

Pre order of 2014 Shizuoka Hobby Show items should begin this week.

There shouldn't be any difference between JDM and export version of the GTR Long Tail kit, besides the decals and the box.
Murcielago SV export version also has a different box, and it's supposed to have a large "SV" logo decals, while the JDM kit has smaller ones.

Aoshima blog doesn't say why, and it makes no business sense to make different decals and boxes, but I've read the phrase "licensor approval" more than enough to make me believe that it has something to do with how the manufacturers want to market their brands. That's just my speculation, though.

The different box art has nothing to do with licensing , its all about marketing, Aoshima wants the export box art to be different then the Japan market kits, to entice US buyers to buy from their US disturbers, that is why the US version of this kit is different as well, it is going to have some different parts then the Japan market kit.

There is some progress, but not much to show. I'm stuck in preparations stage. Glued some parts before priming and filled in seams and
injection marks. Aoshima designers managed to put most of those marks out of sight, which is great. But some still need to be filled. Fit
is great all over the kit and I'm pretty happy with that. Next will be primer.

I was only able to spend one night down at my modeling workbench this weekend, but I've done
quite a bit more painting for this build. Most of other parts beside body panels are painted in their
base colors by now. Some detail brush painting is left to do and then body panels, when Gulf colors
arrive. In one hand I'm looking forward to Gulf colors, in other hand I'm a bit horrified with all the
masking I will have to do.

What you plan on doing to the undersides/inside of the engine covers?

Gold metal foil, gold paint, black or even silver foil?

I am thinking on this one, thought perhaps gold foil.

Fujimi pe parts can fit barely the engine cover vents with careful gluing, havnt tried any of the other parts, I do have aoshimas detail set.

interested to see what your body will turn out like.are you doing a davidoff style or just a standard gulf blue with the orange parts going down the middle if the car, decals?

Was thinking maybe a single british flag on the left wheel louvres?

I been watching and waiting for updates, I couldnt wait to get stuck into mine, a window pillar broke on 1 door.hopefully the glass will sort it out when in place.

nice update.

For inside of engine covers I just plan to paint them SG black and may be apply some gold foil. I'm not sure yet, if racing versions actually had
anything there. Will check later. I don't think real car had any mesh inside rear engine door. Short tail didn't have anything there, I believe. At least
I cannot see any on my references for both short and long tail. I plan to build Gulf colours car with full Davidoff livery from FIA GT championship.
That's why I'm worried about future masking difficulties. Current plan is to paint blue and orange, but decals have orange stripes as well. That's unfortunate
about a window pillar on your kit. Plastic of those kits seems to be soft enough. Mine 1st kit had no damages from shipping. Didn't check other 2 yet.

I did notice those unwanted seams on exhausts. But frankly I don't see a way to pre-assemble them and put in
place later. Until whole rear "sub-frame" is attached to the floor, I don't think it would be possible to align exhausts
properly. And when this "sub-frame" assembly is attached to the floor, I don't see a way to install pre-assembled
exhausts. If you figure out a way to do it, let me know. At present I plan to assemble them later as per instructions
and prepared to live with seams on exhausts.

bradfordian

I fitted the axle etc, then went to fit them extension pipes that run to the rear, saw the prob and simply yanked thd engine out  managed to come out pretty unscathed.

I broke every attachment point for the manifolds to the engine removing the exhausts but I drilled and inserted bits of metal rod in them to attach to the engine now.i reshaped the points where the 2 pipes attach and a bit of super glue for gaps, juat needs final bit of work then I can prime and check.

but without the work it will look cheap with the covers off hhe rear, thats why I am doing it and gave you an heads up.

Spent about 5 hours brush painting details. Not perfect, but will do for this model. Some items are separate and not too
difficult to paint, but many details are molded on and not easy to pick out. I don't have detailed references for this car,
so I've used Aoshima's instructions and my imagination to guide my choices of colours. This build is OOB and no modifications
were done and no details added so far. I'm not so happy with detailing of brakes in this kit, but decided to leave them as is
for this OOB build. Here are some photos before assembly starts.

yep, visible, now. I got one on the go too. I was going to get the carbon decal set but after seeing the start of your build I realized that like 90% will be pretty well hidden. I have some small bits left over from previous builds I'll use on the interior. Glad I didnt get the S27 set, would of been $40+ spent for no real reason. I suppose if you're doing a completely opened up car then doing the full carbon treatment would be ok, but as a OOB build, not worth the cost. And the pics look good. Just waiting for the weather to warm up and get rid of some of the dampness so I can start painting. Thanks for posting up pics of your build. It looks great.

Little bit more progress on this build. Attached front sub-frame and assembled parts of front suspension. Also assembled
engine parts. Engine looks great and is one of the highlights of this model, imho. Exhausts are in the opposite a bit of a let
down. Spend over an hour fiddling with parts and trying to figure out a way to pre-assemble exhaust headers and middle
parts and install them later. The one way I could see it could be done is if one installs engine, gearbox and rear cooling ducts
at the same time. With all the glue that has to be added on that step, I certainly don't see myself been able to do that.
So, plan for now is to go ahead according to instructions and have those ugly seems on exhausts. After all this is OOB build
and I think I could live with those seems, no problem. May be I will build another Aoshima kit with modifications and corrected
brakes later.

I was looking at the exhaust on mine and thinking the same thing. There's no way to really attach them without showing the seems. One idea I had was to use some silver foil from cigarette packs to use as heat shielding after the parts are installed to try and hide the seems. But Im aways off from that stage yet so not sure how easy it will be do that.

I am just building mine with engine covers on, I removed the engine after finding out the fit was bad, removed exhausts from engine, did all the work to get the exhausts nice.fitted them to engine and tried fitting the engine back, thats when disaster after disaster started.

so engine covers fitted for me.next time I have forethought if I build a racing version, realy you need to cut off the exhausts nearer the engine, then attach the long part and get rid of seam, then attatch it to where its been cut off as its less noticable

More progress on this build. I've received Scalefinishes Gulf blue and orange paints. Painted body panels and wheels accordingly.
Paints are base finishes and require clear coat for their final look. Also painted small items for dashboard and exhaust pipes.
Decals were applied to steering wheel, dashboard, electrical boxes and small tank (air?). Beside painting I continued with assemblies.
Worked on dashboard, pedals, small air tank and steering column. And assembled gearbox with drive shafts.

I was only able to return to my modeling workplace last night. Some progress for this build.
Put together exhausts and assembled engine bay. That whole sub-assembly is attached to floor by
now. Used epoxy glue exclusively, so I had time for final adjustments. As expected there are
gaps where exhaust headers connect to rear portions. For this build it'll do. I plan to do detailed
build in near future and will try to figure out a solution for elimination of those seams.

Last photo is a mock up with cockpit in place. I have to add number of items to cockpit
before I could permanently attach it to the floor.

Even after 2 weeks I could still smell paint on the body. Is it normal for Scalefinishes' paint to
take such long time to dry.

Looking really good. I missed the update with the colour on the body and rims and see you got them from Scale Finishes. How close a match do you think they are for the FIA Gulf car? I too am doing that one, just waiting on the Tabu set to arrive at the supplier. I emailed zero-paints to see if they were making them anytime soon but if Scale Finishes are good I may just go that route.

It's actually just a regular fluorescent orange when you compare it to the Tabu decals sheet, so pretty straight forward to match. The blue is a little trickier as it's a pearlescent finish, so regular Gulf Blue won't do. When I build mine I am thinking of using the Regular Gulf Blue and over spraying it with Tamiya Pearl clear, or obtaining some pearl powder and mixing it into the blue, applying that, then clear coating over the top..

lezdep
06-15-2014, 06:02 PM
I've used Scalefinishes' paints for this build. I don't get too concerned about colour matching,
because in my opinion it's not possible to match colour now, unless you go back in time and look
at real car as it was. Colours will look different on all the different photos and on all different monitors.

Worked on cockpit items and pretty much completed it Friday night. It was then permanently attached
to floor with epoxy. By now chassis is pretty much done, except some small details. Now attention
will turn to competing paint job, decals and body shell overall.

Not a big update, but again important step. Sprayed black, removed masking and removed bleed through defects as much as I could, and
finally put clear coat over it. Hope is that I will be able to hide imperfections in paint under orange lines. Had troubles with clear this time.
For some reason my air-brush was spitting while I was spraying first batch of clear. I've cleaned it and it was ok afterwards, but there are
bunch of imperfections in clear coat. Before I can get to decals, I will have to polish those imperfections off as much as I can.

With my MFH short tail build blocked somewhat and P34 almost finished, I was able to return to this model.
About 3 weeks ago I've polished off imperfections in clear coat and unblocked myself to start decal application.
Started it over past weekend. Spent about 5 or 6 hours so far. Completed couple of complex tasks.
First applied side decals. Next put down thin orange stripes. Fortunately my masking was close enough
for stripes to lay down alright. I had to add couple of small extensions where stripes were too short for my paint
layout. Overall I'm pretty happy about how it turned put. Couple more complex tasks are left to do -
wide central orange stripe to apply over roof and rear doors and then Davidoff logos for the doors. After that
rest of the decals should be relatively easy and straightforward to apply.

Here are two quick shots of its current state.

Spend 3 weekend nights on it. It's looking more like a racing car now. Good thing is that all difficult decals are done by now.
Decals weren't designed for Aoshima kit, likely for Fujimi one instead. Had to do quite a bit of patching on glow red/orange.
Luckily I didn't need one of the red/orange decals, so I was able to use it for patching. Never perfect, but I'm mostly satisfied.
Such a cool livery, imho. Only small number are left to add. Here are some mock up photos.

Decals are pretty much done. Few small ones I will apply over the clear later. Waiting couple of days for decals to dry and then it'll be off to get clear coat.

More progress over past week. Got clear coat on top of decals. Then masked and pained black on inside panels.
Also painted windows. Last night installed side windows, wind shield, rear and front lights. Not that much left to do.
Here are few more mock up photos.

Thanks for positive comments. But this time it looks better on photos then in real life. Believe me, that particular paint job
didn't go that well. There are many "orange peal" spots. Some I have removed, many are still there, just not very visible on photos.
Anyway, getting close to completion. Not much change visually, but major assembly steps were completed last night.
Body is mated with chassis. Only rear wing and mirrors are left to attach. Then bunch of PE simulated rivet heads.

Not 100% finished, but very close. That's probably the last update in WIP, before it goes to Completed section.
Attached rear wing and rear view mirrors, as well as exhausts. Then PE simulated rivet heads and emblems at the rear.
Last added few remaining small decals.
