Intake questions

I have a '99 GSR, and I am just starting to get into adding stuff to it. I'm going to work on engine and handling first then do a body kit later on. The first thing I was going to add was an intake. I was wondering what you all thought was the best. I've read alot and it seems like a lot of people like the AEM CAI, I'm just slightly worried because I live in WA state you know lots of rain and all that. I was also looking at the Racing Sports Akimoto Funnel Ram IV, I was wondering if any of you had opinions experience or anything with that intake. Thanks for the info in advance.:bigthumb:

Yeah, I think with the CAI you'd be cleaning the filter like nobody's business. I bought a K&N Typhoon Intake. I think that if you take out the resonator box when installing this, it shouldn't be more than a 1hp difference with the AEM. But an intake is an intake. Anything that has a tube that is mendrel bend will work fine, as long as it fits.

I had a CAI and if you don't like cleanning the filter all the time then get a short ram. I changed mine to a AEM short ram b/c I was having to clean the filter on the CAI all the time. Also don't be fooled by cheap intakes they use cheap low quality filters. The funnel ram filter is a great filter as well as k&n, which is what a AEM comes with.

Go with the aem cai, I have one and love it. As far as the v2, i just think its a marketing ploy. And, I dont have a bypass valve on mine and have driven through downpours. No hydrolock and the only way you'll get it is if u go through puddles deep enough to get a lot of water into the filter.

Cool, I use mine as a daily driver, would I have to worry about cleaning it all that much? Also is RSA considered a cheap brand? Thanks for the info so far.

I havent checked, after 2 months, how dirty my filter is but im about to. I guess it depends on what kind of conditions u drive in and if you keep your splashguard on just below the filter, which u should do if u dont get a bypass valve. They have recharger kits as mentioned above. I would check every month or so just to make sure that its alright, just simply lift up the splashguard and u can tell from there.

I've got another question on this. Would a short ram (AEM, K&N, Funnel IV), and a carbon fiber Evo style hood be kind of the same effect as a cold air intake since the filter would be about where the vents are in the hood? I was going to get a carbon hood anyways, I was thinking it might be close.

Thats a good question and i don't know exactly how close it would come to a cai. Well, i guess since you're pulling some outside air in through the hood and to the short ram it acts similar to a cai, but then again, the short ram is not built like the cai. If you can, get the hood and a cai.

i am about to purchase an intake and exhaust and im not sure on what would be best. Im thinking about an injen intake and the apex n-1 cat back. Some people have told me that the GReddy evo cat back is better though. so any advice would be aprecitatted.
thanx

Yeah, I'm trying to decide between AEM Short Ram or CAI, Injen, or RSA Funnel Ram IV, and I think I'm going to do the Greddy Evo Cat back and DC Ceramic Header.

get the CAI and the GReddy Evolution. you'll love the sound from that combo. the exhaust is nice and deep, and in the low revs, you can here the air flowin from the intake. and in the high revs, the intake will take over and the sound is awesome in my opinion.

Hey chase I know this is off the subject but how much did you lower your car I'm lookin into it but i don't want coilovers i just want a 1 time spring change so my camber and all will stay right without a kit. The reason i ask is thats exactly what I want mine to look like when im done. also what size wheels. any advice would be great thanx

cai=cold air intake, but how is a short ram intake different? will a generic cai still give almost the same sound and power inprovement that something like an AEM would, just without the cool stickers?

short ram doesn't show as big of gains. but its only about 1-2hp difference, which in the scheme of things, is jack shit.

yes, generic is the same. all ur paying for is the colored piping an the AEM sticker.

basically all cold air intakes are going to give u the same amount of h/p, but each motor is different. u may only see a couple h/p gain from a CAI, where someone else could see 5-7 on a dyno.

OVERALL tho, ur likely to see around 5-7hp from the cai...
