98 Camry 4 cylinder, surging, 4000 rpm

I have a Camry with 198K miles. When accelerating hard and hitting just over 4000 rpm the car will start surging. Letting off the gas and allowing the the automatic transmission to shift will stop the surging.

Will do this in any gear. The first few times the P1310 code came up but the last few times it did not throw any codes.


Also have the P0401 code which I have had for several years.

This is a very consistent problem which only occurs at just over 4000 rpms.

Anyone else seen this issue and know what could cause it?

Just did some more testing and found that slowly reving the engine with car in Park will cause the same issue. When it gets to 4000 RPM it surges. Is there are rev limiter at 4000 rpm for some reason?

Check the following:
EGR valve stuck closed <= Most common - Clean EGR valve
EGR Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV)
Open or short in VSV circuit for EGR
EGR valve position sensor open or short circuit
Vacuum or EGR hose disconnected
EGR valve position sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor malfunction
ECM

For the P01310 code, replace your #2 ignition coil, the one sending spark to cylinders 2 and 3. It is probably not related to your surging problem.

Pretty sure the problem is related to the ECU thinking the car is in Park/Neutral when it is in drive.
It is hitting a rev limiter at 4000 rpm.
I did check, remove and clean the Park/Neutral switch but no help.

i would also check your idle air control valve. it might be sticking. if it is simply cleaning it out so it wont stick helps with this problem.
