I am considering purchasing a '98 328i. Is there anything specific I need to look out for? Any common defects? Service issues?
Any other advice?

Buying a house. The S4 is awesome. It's the most confidence inspiring car I have ever driven. With all that power and grip you feel invinceble on the road.

This would be an E36. Loaded, sport package, 5spd.

some issues, i had a 97 328i and i am sure it might relate to the 98 model.
Engine is bullet proof, of course do check and change your oil periodically. The instrument and radio display go bad. Mine went away instrument and radio @53k and 68k respectively.i mean not the lights but the actual display, so you will have to replace at least the instrument cluster or leave it if you don't care about the temp display and all.
Other than this only thing that really bothered me was first gear notchiness especially at stops and cold mornings, if you go low on engine oil, it sure becomes like hell trying to put it in first. it's however is a good indication of low engine oil.
Then the third gear is equally a hassle if shift fast into thirs from secnod but it's does'nt always happen.
Then a recall on faulty crankshaft position sensor, what happens here is a bit of delay in movement after you engage in first and gas it.
That's about it.

I think I've found what I want. I'm still considering a 95 M3 or a 97 M3 sedan if I can find one cheap. The 328i is in really good shape, with 57k miles and a 100k mi warranty for ~$24K. That's gonna be hard to pass up.
By the way, does anyone know how this engine responds to a supercharger? I have seen a few kits advertise ~290hp. Can they take it? Any experiences?

I have seen a couple kits that makes the engine push out about 320hp like the Euro Spec M3.
