 Hey it has been awhile since i last looked at the vw forums due to my car beingin in the shop for about.............4 weeks and damn it the gear still isnt in. If u dont know i got a 2003 gti vr6 with the 6 spd tranny. I was heading to the Bug out in Manassas VA and all of a sudden at a stop light i down shifted to 2nd to slow down and i heard a snap i was like fuck so i pushed it to 2nd and it just grinded the gear. I did this allot trying to figure it out when all of a sudden i was like.. Its a fuckin synchro. So i try to double clutch it to slam it in n it stil grinded. Well it ended up my clutch got ripped to hell n my flywheel is fed up. But i was talking to a guy at eip and he said that VW is having trouble with the trannys but i was wondering if anyone knows anything about this?????????????????????????????????????//:biggrin2:

I've been working on VW for about 3 years now. I have never heard or seen a tranny problem on any manual VW trans. All the ones I've seen with problems have been abuse. Down shifting too soon at high speeds, slamming gears, and not clutching it right. My brother-in-law has a 2000 jetta TDI. He is extra hard on it. At 11000 miles, the pressure plate exploded. Of course, he was slamming gears and down shifting too soon. Hope your not to pissed at VW over this.:frown: When you have a BRAND NEW car, it takes a while to get parts because they haven't started to mass produce them yet.:sorry: Soory to hear your having so much trouble.

Where have you been? Manual VW tranny's are notorious for 2nd gear grind issues. However, I assumed that the 6 speed tranny wasn't in the same boat. Sucks to hear that it, too, has the issue. All you have to do is search for, "2nd gear grind" on the VWvortex and you'll get a TON of hits. I know this from experience. I have an '02 GTI (5 speed) and had the infamous 2nd gear grind issue and it wasn't from abuse. I went back and forth with my sucky local dealership and also with VW about this. If you shifted @ or above 5k it would grind, every single time. No matter how slow you shifted (yes the clutch was in). I even took one of the tech's along (had him drive) and he got the same result. The dealership concluded that there was an obvious issue, but VW wouldn't give them the go-ahead to tear it down and fix it. There's been much debate about whether it's bad sychro's or what, but some dealerships were allowed to fix the issue (not mine of course). Some people suggested changing out the gear oil, which I thought was crazy because I'd only had my car for a year when it started doing that. Oddly enough, my grind ended up going away by itself. Which I was glad, because that was the one thing that was keeping me from getting chipped (for the first time) because I didn't want to have the grind issue with the added HP/torque I was going to have.
So yeah, VW's definitly have well-known tranny issues.

BTW:
In regards to the thing about the getting a brand new car and parts not being available. Although the car is brand new, the technology/parts are not. The 6 speed tranny has been around for atleast a year and a half or so (maybe more) and the car/body style itself has been around for at least 4 years.

well it is finally fixed.

The only tranny from vw that i have delt with thus far that had no 2nd gear grind was the diesel 5 spd but then again it is a bit of a diff setup isnt it?

the 6speed gearbox uses a hydraulic slave cylinder. we've had afair few of these fail. they leak. also the clutch master cylinder is listen in the technical service manual as known to fail. i'm guessing that the slave cylinder wasn't getting complete movement. your clutch would drag and hence the crunching of gear at high input shaft speeds.
just a thought..
