Blower Motor Issue

I have an 02 Grand Prix GT and when I got in the car yesterday and went to the store I noticed I only have a heater fan on 5.. nothing but full on. Something like this happened a few years ago and they said it was the ignition switch and I replaced it to the tune of $200 and it worked ok. So what are the chances another ignition switch would go bad in 3 years? Anyone else have this issue and if so what was the solution in your case? Thanks in advance for any assistance. It is pretty cold here in Western NY so I really need the heat to work correctly.

So, you only have hi? Were you having problems with the other speeds, or did this happen all at once?
First, check your fuse....one for low speeds, and one for hi...then check for power at the resistor block....

Yeah... only high speed , the others do not work at all. Neither with the heater or the A/C. It did happen all at once. Just before I noticed it there was a brief smell in the car... thought it may have been oil or something from the car in front of me.. now that I think of it ii suppose it could have been a wire?? I will check the fuses and just where is the resistor block located?? Thanks for your response... :)

High speed runs directly from the blower speed switch to the motor. The other speeds all run through the blower resistor. The smell you had was probably the resistor going up in smoke. It's underneath the dash, near the blower motor. Follow the wires from the motor to the resistor. The connector may also be burned.

GMtech1, I just looked at a schematic.....it's not showing a resistor block, only a blower module......wouldn't that be variable speed, rather than 5 separate speeds?

You are correct, to a point. My info calls it a "Blower motor resistor assembly". High speed runs through a relay inside the assembly, the other speeds , labled -low. M1, M2 and M3 run through a resistor block inside the assembly, this is not a PWM system....either way, the resistor assembly is most likley the problem.
