Manual Shift Locks

I have a 95 Nissan Maxima.
At 180,000 mile the clutch was changed and ran well.

I now have 226,500 miles. Recently the manual STICK shift locks while the car is running on the road. If forced, the manual shift will engage, at least into 2nd, and sometimes 3rd and 4th (not 5th). While turning the car off and on again the shift unlocks (good for a few miles (5-30 miles or more)). When the car runs....it runs well....shifting, clutch etc..is normal.
However the problem is getting worst in city driving. My time and unfortunately my funds (not working) are low and my mechanic wants $200 just to open the transaxle to tell me what is wrong.
Can this be the Shift Linkage & Lever Assembly? Has anybody seen this problem before? I am tempted to take it apart to inspect the linkages. Your help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
