Need help deciding

I have a 1998 Civic EX. I am not wanting to spend a shit load of money on making my car fun fast. Do you guys suggest that i keep my stock engine in it and add a turbo charger and all the accessories that i can? If so does anyone know what the times would be on the 1/4 mile. Or should I get an engine swap? I heard that once you have an engine swap that almost everything one your car has to be changed to performance parts. What does everyone think?

Honestly, its going to take some money no matter which way you go... the turbo is going to require that you build up that engine a bit so that it can handle the pressure... I'd suggest an f22 or b18 swap...both are really easy to turbo, or if your heart isn't set on turbo, go b16a1.

you don't wanna get the first gen obd0 b16a1 for a 96 obd2 civic. you are going to have to get some custom mounts(hasport,place racing,etc...) cable to hydro tanny conv, a lot of wiring needs to be done, its just not woth it. just get a b16a2(99-00 si) and it should drop right in if i'm not mistaken.

I think he was reffering to the 99-00 USDM Si which B16A2 is the right code. I don't think he meant the JDM second gen in which case you're correct.

Usually when people talk engine swaps, you dont talk USDM... because the price is usually alot more. If getting a JDM motor, MAKE SURE you request that it be for your year or NEWER. If you have a 1992, make sure its at least a 1992... if its a 1999, make sure its at least a 1999 - otherwise your swap will be considered "illegal" once installed.

do you know exactly what makes it illegal? I'm curious on this one... never heard it before

The motor has to be same year as the chassis or newer...

Call your local DMV if you dont believe me.

most people on here are from america, making it easier to get an american motor. the second b16 that came out in america was the b16a3 and came in the del sol from 94-97. the third b16 to hit america was in the civic si from 99-00 with the engine code of b16a2.

Not everyone is a car mechanic and would know the differance in motors. Prevents someone selling a 2000 car with a 1988 motor in it - its to try and keep everyone protected. Also, each generation (OBD0, OBD1, OBD2, OBD3) all have certain emission requirements...

ohhhh ok... makes sense, just reminded me of a Civic hatch I looked at with a really nasty gen4 civic engine in it :mad: the thing was sooooo nice and clean from the outside and the interior was just riddick, but man o man was that thing slow... popped the hood on the side of the road during my test drive and broke down laughing: I had my 92 dx at the time and kneeeew that wasn't the right engine so I looked it up when I got home :icon16:

this may be a dumb Q but aren't all jdm swaps, more or less, illegal. i'm under the impression the jdm emissions standards aren't as strict as ours so to pass USDM laws honda, nissan, mitsubishi, scubadu, etc. detuned their cars to pass our gay ass standards.

Greater results would be found by having tighter emissions on things like busses and large trucks - but good luck putting tighter restrictions on either of those, since they are both so widely used. It would be like trying to tell the airline industry to cut down its emissions... we just rely on them to heavily to impose such restrictions.

i was half kidding, i don't expect them to stop exploring space so i can have a better car. but i didn't know they were clean like that. good info.
