The sparkplugs are always placed in the cylinderhead, into the combustion chamber.

On heads with a single over head cam or push rods the spark plugs are often placed on one side of the head leaning invars to the engine so you can se them (if you remove the wires) if you look on the side of the head.

With double over head cams (or some hemis) the spark plugs are placed closer to the center of the combustion chamber which means that they are placed under the valvecover. Often there are some type of "sparkplug-cover" in the middle of the valvecover which can be removed separatly, under which the spark plugs (with coils in some engines) are placed.
