serial numbers on the engine, since japan has strick emmision standards it's not unusual for a motor to be swaped out at 50 000 km (bout 30k miles) and replaced with a new one. the serial numbers are a way to track this.

I have the xsi motor. It doesn't say A1? It has those serial numbers yeh but thats not imprinted next to the b16a.

I'm with mellowboy on this one. I own a JDM SiR and the B16A is NOT an "A1". No EF8/9 came out with anything other than B16A and then the serial number on them - nor did the XSi from what I've seen on half-cuts, hybrids etc. On the other hand, the Euro EE8/9 might have.
"A1" is a US term

people call the first gen b16 a B16A1 becuase the US versions of b16 are B16A2 and B16A3. its a term made up by people so they could know what you were talking about when you said B16A, which should be obvious, since the USDM B16s have a suffix. sure it could be confused with the SirII B16A, but thats why you clarify.

Only the US has these fantasies about an "A1". The rest of us seem to know what it is  Bottom line is that there is no such thing
Rule of thumb: B16A (JDM/EDM ( ? ) 1st gen motor), B16A2 (second gen), B16A3 (third gen).

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, but the EDM EE8 CRX’s have B16A1 followed by the rest of the serial numbers stamped on them. Maybe they felt the need to spell it out to us dumb Euros:icon16:

Cool, was pretty sure that was the case for the EE Civics and CRXs - hence the "?" in my statements

Iv seen and worked on a lot of B series engines.
In Japan none of the B series, from the 1st 2g Prelude to the last Integra Type R had any numbers stamped after them.
They are either: B20a (since it came first) B16a, B18c, B16b, B20b.
However all the Japanese Honda dealerships are equiped with large reference books which show which engine number applies to which engine. There are maybe 10 differnt version of the B20 engine, from the 2g Prelude to the CRV it came in SOHC and DOHC form, as well as injected and Carbed, and with differnt types of Carbs, etc etc.
But they all have thier own serial numbers, and they are all built in sequence. So for example its known that numbers from xxx1-xxx3 are all SOHC twin carbs, while numbers xxx3-xxx4 are all DOHC twin carbs etc etc for all the B seires, and even most of the D series engines.
Altough since they were built in even more variety, and in more than one location they stared stamping numbers after the D15....
(I have however seen a twin carb D15 in a 96 Integra which only had D15y stamped on it  )
B and D series engines sold anywhere out side of Japan, even in Japanese assembled vechiles however have a number stamped after them. This helps service centers over seas with out access to the same resources as the Japanese to tell the differnt engines apart, and it also lets the Japanese know what engines are for export markets, which often get a differnt spec engine.
