Axle Removal?

Which bolts do I take out so that I can pop the axles out of the tranny? All I have left to do do get the a6 out is that and the shift likage. Any helpful hints on either the linkage or the axles? Thanks.

just bust the axle nut off with an impact gun, making sure to un crimp the tab thats notched first or it wont move, then just pull em out.

Just the axle nut? Nothing Else? Thats easy.

you shouldnt have to take anything else off, you need to raise the car up off the front wheels tho, but just getting that nut off is a job in itself.

Do you know what size it is cuz I dont have any that big so I have to go to the store and get one right now.

I found out that its 32mm if anyone else was wondering.

you'll have to remove the lower ball joint from the steering knuckle, so you can pivot the hub out to remove the axles, that is, unless of course your engine is out and you can pull the axles from the engine bay side..

you do lowers?..i do the upppers :biggrin:

I got the lower ball joint off on the drivers side and it was pretty easy. I went over to the passenger side, got the nut off, but now it wont come off! Ive been pulling and prying but it doesnt budge. Im gonna find someone who has a gear puller and try that.

are u using a pickle fork?

the thing is hard to get off, I had to replace my axles, we used a hammer and one of those dent tools for metal work haha...it took us about 30 minutes of pounding to get it out :smile:

no, i dont have a pickle fork but i went and bought a gear puller which i think will work perfect. I got one thats too big tho so ill try and return it tomorrow and get a smaller one.

to get my axle in, i took of the strut and upper control arm, i dont like the lower ball joint because that will take all the grease out of it

you really shouldnt have to take anything off to get it out. But it is a little easier if you take off the "wishbone" thing under the strut.

The axle nut is 32mm, and its a hell of a lot easier to get it off with the car on the ground. Then raise it up and finish taking them off. Use either a small pry bar or a wide screwdriver, and pop your axles from the differential. Should come right out with a few good shots.
