Whoa.... eastern US is no winter play ground either.... I live in northeastern Pa, the Poconos, and this past year we had nearly 80" of snow... it maybe less than what you got, but it is dammed more than sunny So Cal got!!! Besides your ride looks nice.... want it to look better(shiney) get 3M hand glaze. It isn't a wax... its a polish. you'd be surprised how it make it look.... mine is still mostly stock paint

Ever checked out Club4ag? There are TONS of AE86 people in there.

i've being on club4ag for more than a year now ...4agze.com too

we have toyotanation in canada and dorikaze and my friend Pat started ToyoDori in febuary its all going well...

the thing here in montreal its the salt they put on the roads in winter
so our car rust like hell....

a 5 years old car if it is not oil treated will be already rusted on the quater panels and rockers... and i dont mean surface rust ...:frown:

my ae86 is lucky to have little rust like that it was in storage every winter since 1986...and i stil have to do the 2 rear wheel wells....and part of the rocker panels...:frown:

anyway i'm still lucky to have a ae86 i guess

I love them like crazy.I dont have any truble in the winter because I have a winter-beater so my car stays all nice and clean. But if i did drive it in the winter my front skirt would be a good snow plow because it is so low.

i dont have an ae86 but i would love to own one, and for that matter anything from toyota they are the best car manufacturer out there but anyway more power to the ae86 drivers out there who take an almost forgotten about car and revive it into a domestic killing machine (*tear*)

I own an 87 Hatch GTS, 86 Hatch SR5 and i'm going this weekend to pick up my newest purchase, an 85 Coupe GTS.

I'm also getting a free 87 Hatch GTS shell sometime within the next month or so. My SR5 is in my signature, no pics of the GTS, it's an uber project car, many different colours and some rust to fix up.

edit: I've replaced those nasty stockers on my SR5 with a set of supras I recently refinished.

Where on earth do you find these cars?? I can't find them anywhere!! All I can find are the LE's or non hatchbacks.
It's near impossible to find a gts sr5 hatchback.
You would think they're easy to find and cheap, but nooOoo...I can find 240sx's cheaper than AE86's...

I just recently startedwatching Initial D...awesome series! I want that hachi roku now...but its hard to find. The model in particular is a 86 corolla sr5 gts or something like that. Does it have a body kit? I don't think so, I think thats how they all look...

I might just try to find a rx7 to drift with as those are a little easier to find and almost as cheap.

Toymaniac

there is not kit on takumi's car....its the bumpers they got in japan.... but here due to collision standards we had the other bumpers...

Which model years in North America were considered AE86s (i.e. had LSD and the twin cam engine). I have seen an 87 GTS coupe not the hatch. How would I tell if it is a true AE86.

BTW nice ride.

In North America, AE86 models are 84 through early 87.

Later 87, Toyota unveiled the next gen, which is AE92 (FWD)

Positions 4-7 on the VIN should read AE86:

JT*AE86*******

Hope this helps...

like to add to the above post:

JT*AE88 denotes GTS.

85-87 were production year for the GTS

I like Ae86's and would love to get a hatch but dont feel like paying ridiculous prices just because people who saw them in a cartoon are driving up prices. I'd probably buy one if i could find one within driving distance for 1500-1700$
I'm also worried if I could drive it on a daily basis without getting frustrated. The slowest car I've ever owned had 215hp stock before modifications and I cant tolerate slow vehicles......
Not to say their performance is lacking, I just dont see them being competitive in anything other then autocross.

i found it very difficult.

REally? Did you do it right? From what I hear you're supposed to basically drop the clutch at 5 or 6 rpm while your turning in order to let the wheels spinout, then turn the direction your car is sliding towards to control it.
can any one confirm this?

I was looking into RX7's too since they seem to be cheaper and easier to find. Does anyone know if they're good to drift with?

taku28
09-12-2003, 05:21 PM
Hmm rx7's are nice and yes they are bale to be drifted.Recomendation though is use the heal toe technique form the series it works alot or just use your left foot for brake.
