safe boost for rb20det??

I know that this has already been discussed for the 2.5t I was just wondering weather the same goes for the rb20. I have a turbosmart boost controler on mine, the one with the fighter jet switch (cop bait) and it is just a little to easy to turn it up.
Also I just wanted to know whats involved with high flowing a turbo and if it involves changing the computer etc. Thanks for your help!

Do not go higher than 14psi, make sure that you have a decent intercooler as well. Some turbo's can handle higher and some can't. Also if you have a decent exhaust, filter your boost should be around the 11psi mark anyway.

thanks for that, I just dont want to blow up my turbo just yet, rather than fix the thing I would probably be better off buying a whole new engine. I wonder how much more performance I would get out of an rb25det....I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that its just a simple matter of dropping it in to the old engine mounts, the gearbox and all that will conect straight up.Is this the case?

Yeah it will drop right it.. but the 2L gearbox is alot weaker... although I havn't seen them blow on the 25T engine..

Personally spend the money on the RB20DET, it is a damn good engine and you can still get enough if not more than enough HP for a road car, 450hp+...

The 25T has different compression, and therefore can't be boosted as much is stock form..

Stick with the RB20DET, do cams, turbo, ECU , fuel... and it will fly..

When you say cams, can you buy these with a performance grind or do you have to do it to the existing ones? I have heard that Microtech are good when it comes to the ecu is this the case, are they still easy to modify being imports? Finally what is a good turbo to put on these things or should I just high flow the one I have?
Youl have to excuse these questions, I am new to this game so I dont know an awful lot about turbos. I'm willing to learn though!!

ER.. R31's have the red top RB20DET which has less power than the Silver top one (R32)

Ray from GIzzmo told me that the Silver top RB20DET's detonate at above 15psi. There is still plenty of fuel but they run too much advance from the factory to run that amount of boost.

Er.. 13.5 psi gives a nice power increase without too much risk er.. but check your fuel pump first and mixtures with a proper mixture meter. Mine was so sick it was leaning out at 11psi.

how much more powerful is the silver top rb20? what is different about it that gives it more power??

Also make sure your Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) never gets too high. Although some says that it should be at the 850C line to be safe, but I make sure mine never goes above 750C.

The red top puts out about 134kw while the silver top puts out 160kw (sorry 158kw to be exact, wank wank) this is due to various modification and upgrades such as a roller bearing turbo, better heads, ECU blah blah blah.

Get a RB20DET (silver) like Ben said its cheaper to mod & you'll get a better revving, smoother engine.

GTS4 Ben is it true that RB20's have forged pistons? I heard this off some guy.

So how much can I pick up a silver top rb20det for? Can i use my gearbox and computer or would i be best buying the whole package?

if the 25det has higher compresssion than the 20det that an easy fix. Lets bolt on a decompression plate!

And wht is involved in high flowing the standard turbo?

I'm not sure but I think high flowing a turbo involves replacing the standard turbo wheel with another one out of a bigger turbo. Whatever the process involves is suposed to work fairly well. If anyone can give a more precise answer it would be greatly appreciated!

I dont know too much about the topic but, you replace the compressor and exhaust wheels, the shaft is then machine & computer balanced, the intake mouth is shaved to make it bigger, the bearing are replaced, some times the compressor housing is replaced all together with a bigger, better flowing item.

Sounds Expensive! Might be easier and more effective to buy a new larger turbo?? The way things are with these engines it sounds like you can buy a turbo engine for less $$ than the turbo alone!

true highflowing sounds way 2 much effort to do to the standard item! Id rather chuck on a HKS t3540 hybrid and crank it up to 35psi!! :silly2:
