1st gen DOHC timing pics

I forgot I had these, and figured I would share for those you doing your own motorwork in cases where you will need to reset your timing.

Timing off on camgears:

Even though they are off by just a teensy bit, it's still a teensy too much.

whoa, nice pics..I just did my timing belt for the first time, what a headache!! I got it right...the third time...:rolleyes:

lmao! The 3rd time!? Hmmm, you know in a Neon timing is crucial...

For instance, this is just extreme, but if you were to lose your timing belt... Say it snapped or fell off, whatever the deal would be, you would fuck your head all up!

The timing makes the valves open when the piston goes up and closes when it goes down... So if you turn your cam without the timing belt you'll screw your valves all up.

...Brings me to a question, kat-hunny might have this one... I just redid my head, rebuilt, everything. All same stuff in her, but complete redo on the head. I broke one of my timing belt covers, I think it was the outside one. Anywho... I put it all back together without that on there, its great works fine... but how safe is that without that on there? Anyone else running without their belt cover?

I went to the dealership to see how much it would be... $50+ for the whole cover.... Yeah, thats what I said. lol!

People run without their belt covers all the time. Just keep your fingers outta there... ;)

What Scatch said :) There are 4 or 5 guys in my old Neon club running without those covers. $50 is a rip, I got mine for $30 at my dealer.

After finally removing the passenger side engine mount and getting the cover off, this is what I found:

The lower bolt on the timing belt tensioner, at some time, had snapped off, allowing the belt to walk on the gear, leading to the following two pictures.

It also grinded away at the inner timing belt cover.
A mess, yes, Fixable, yes. Pain in my arse, yes. :headshake

I was driving my 1999 dohc dodge neon and My timing chain broke...

So I am hoping that I did not bend the valves in the head and that I can hopefully just put the timing belt on so I can sell the car..

But I have tried and tried and can not seem to get the car to run right... I think the timing marks may be off can someone help me further????

Also all the pics in this thread are no longer available.... SO if anyone can help me get this timing thing tight please help me....

I lined up the yellow marks on the 2 cam gears with the marks on the cover but that doesnt work....

hello everyone. Just was wondering if you could all repost your pics for me. I am going to have my boyfriend replace my timing belt tomorrow after the car died on me on the e way the other night. He spent all day looking at my car, and that was the only thing he can come up with. Any help is much appreciated. This is not something he has ever done before, just wanted to help him somewhat!

make sure your cam gear marks are aligned and the crank shaft is at its mark. then easily start from the crankshaft then to the water pump, around the gear or gears and woolah! first make the crank shaft mark a half a notch counterclockwise so when you put the belt on you carfully turn the crank mark to the arrow. that allows you to take the slack out of the belt.

hello everyone, I was just wondering if anyone else had a problem with removing the crankshaft pully? My boyfriend spent all day trying to fix this piece, and he can't get that pully off! Anyone have any ideas???

someone please help. Cannot get the car to start. Have the Camshaft matching and the crankshaft matching. Still will not start. Even marked the crankshaft 1/2 notch counterclockwise, and is now in place exactly where it should be. What else could be wrong???????????????????????????????????????????
