My 2002 6 cylinder Malibu gives an odder of gas when turning on the heater it has had a fuel pump and filter install 8 months ago and there has not been any smell until I used the heater this winter. I understand fuel consumption is more when using the heater but this is ridiculous I go around 8 or 10 miles and i've used more than a quarter of a tank.

Your heater has nothing to do with fuel other than the smell mixing some fresh air with heat. I would look at fuel pressure regulator bad or leaking. Also around the injectors. Unless you are leaking fuel at pump or filter.

Thanks aleekat
I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and no more fuel smell. It was a job that I would not like to do very many times I needed to remove many parts to be able to replace the regulator. I would hate to think what a repair shop would charge for that job.
The slow response was because I had checked the part several times and it didn't show a leak.
