Porsche 993 GT2 Road version

The Tamiya Porsche GT2 is a great kit an has been build by many. However, it is the clubsport version and I really like to build the 'regular' version of the GT2. A bit less sporty... but still a full bred sports car.

First of all, the kit and the parts.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/Porsche(2).JPG
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_1.jpg
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_2.jpg

This is the reference I've used.
http://www.butzi.cz/modely/95_911_gt2_(993)/95_911_gt2_(993)_01.jpg
http://i2.8000vueltas.com/2009/04/porsche-911-993-gt2-trasera.jpg

So what's the difference between the regular and the club sport edition?
- I'll start of removing all the 'race thingies'. The body is littered with fastners, antenna points and other race car stuff, unclear to me.
- The Spartan interior will be made a bit more luxurious. So no roll cage, but with a radio/cd player and the Porsche Turbo S sport seats and 3-point seatbelts.
- The rims will be replaced bij 3-part RS Speedline rims. (Thanks to ScaleProduction.de I will have a very good base to start from)
- I have to add a second windscreen wiper.
- Remove the towing hooks
- And there a probably tens of things that I will run into.

So... sanding the body, puttying small holes and preparing for primer.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_4.jpg

I also dry-fitted the exhaust system before I started painting.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_5.jpg
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_6.jpg

Some time ago, I already glued the roll cage together, but now I won't be using it. However, this presents a new challenge.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_7.jpg

Tamiya had designed the dashboard to be glued to the roll cage :banghead: So I've added two small pieces of plastic, to be able to glued the dash to the door panels.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_8.jpg

Then everything was primed and painted gloss black, to serve as a base coat for the Alclad and Zero Paints Arctic Silver.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/9049/964c4_3.jpg
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/9049/964c4_4.jpg

The other Porsche is the 964 C4 from my second topic.

After the gloss black, Alclad Aluminum was sprayed on the exhaust parts and dry fitted again.

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_10.jpg

The body parts are all paintend Arctic Silver (later I discovered I forgot to paint the door handles and mirrors :sly: )

http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_15.jpg

And the parts received their first layer of clear coat, in order to place the decals.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_21.jpg

So, next time the decals will be on, I hope the have the exhaust assembled. Until then...

I love this kit; the only one out there with correct suspension/chassis parts for a 993 Porsche.

I too like very much this kit. I have the Taisan and the Sogo-Keibi versions. But I think it has a flaw, the rear fenders need a bit of adjust imo. Your progress is outstanding.

This thread had come to a halt for a while, but not without a reason. Not so much because of problems, but I think Tamiya made a small mistake. The suspension (namely the springs) where ugly, compared to the rest of the kit. And although you probably won't see anything of the adjustment later on, I decided to take up that task.

So it took me a bit of time to search for the right tube and wire, to recreate the suspension coils. I like the selfmade one (top left) better than the original.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/911993gt2_22.jpg

In the top right the front suspenion is shown (unfortunately a bit out of focus). Here you can still see that I've cut away the old spring and replaced it with a piece of styrene tubing. The new coil is already awaiting assembly. :)

Let's hope this will get me back on track real soon.

Work on the car has stalled a bit because I'm having trouble finding pictures of the original gt2 exhaust. The kit has the racing exhaust, where it should have been a more standard streetlegal exhaust.
I've posted the question on a Porsche forum, but perhaps one of you guys have some more information. If so, please post ik here :)

Crap...

You are so right. Now How wil I manage to scribe that in, without respraying... I guess that's not possible. I have to think it over...

Mask and spray only that wing. Or let it go if you are happy with the body.

Deathtrap

I'm still thinking of the filler cap. I think I will always regret not fixing this if I leave it this way... So I will probably take the risk in ending up, respraying (part of) the body.

However, there is also good news. In my search for picture of the exhaust, I wrote a letter to Porsche garage Van Den Berg in Apeldoorn. He gave me a set of excellent pictures for my scratch work. This clearly indicates that Tamiya just used the race version, in stead of really creating the correct exhaust for the road version.

I made a small start scratching the exhausts. I started off creating the muffler by gluing several 2mm thick pieces of plastic card. After curing, I sanded the muffler to the correct shape.

Afterwards, using a candle, I heated some plastic tubing and bend them into the correct shape.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/P1030376.jpg

A more thick profile will be used to create the catalysts.
Later on, everything will be smoothed out using a bit of putty and sanding. But there will be a lot of work, before this is all finished, because I also have to recreate the connection to the turbos as well.

My build speed was never fast, so also with this build, progress is slow. But it is progress though :)

I spend LOTS of time looking through pictures, but eventually I was able to create a new exhaust manifold. The main part was made using 2mm thick plastic card, but I also used parts of the original manifold. Also the turbo was reused, because it resembles the correct one quite well.
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/P1030433.jpg
http://modelbrouwers.nl/media/albums/65/2763/P1030432.jpg

Then I dry-fitted the parts and I think the scale of the new parts is correct, so I can now connect the exhaust to the turbo. And of course, I have to do the same steps for the otherside of the engine.

Very nice work on the exhausts.
One of the reasons I stopped on some of my 993 builds was because I was finding it hard to get detailed images of things like the engine and exhausts. There are far more photos of aftermarket exhausts when I want bone stock ones!

Has it really been two years since my last update?

Time to continue this story.
I've been gradually been building up the exhaust piece by piece. Now both exhaust are done. Only some putty and sanding before I can start spraying the stainless steel.

Tonight I spayed the primer on the exhaust. If all is properly smooth then I can continue with the gloss black and stainless steel.
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/f9/98/f9984c3be94ecbd784e952e76fb1cb6a.jpg

I replaced the wheels with ScaleProduction ones. But the rims are a bit thick and won't fit over the brake calipers. Therefore I milled out the rims.

Basecoating everything in gloss black.
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/ce/4f/ce4f7d713694723fd6b4c112abd2e47c.jpg

After this I noticed I totally forgot to make the chrome end pieces. So a quick dive into my bits box.
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/58/4b/584b547438b5f5f957010f4ba555c4d3.jpg
In the end I used the top set, after removing the chrome and trimming the length a bit.

A day later I sprayed different tones of Alclad. The exhaust in stainless steel. But for some reason it turned out cr*p. And on this pictures it is even worse.
https://modelbrouwers.nl/media/cache/95/66/95667fc9a295e07e0b3eb7ea65c55419.jpg
So I guess I will be redoing this part.

The rims were spayed in chrome and the inserts in Porsche slate gray from Zero Paints.

Also it's a pity you couldn't make up the exhaust sets to sell. I'd buy a few. I'll probably end up using the kit parts on my RWB builds. Don't have time to make these I don't think.

I had thought of resin casting the exhaust; but it would be made up of many parts because of the shape. And a high risk of air bubbles since I don't have a pressure chamber.
Perhaps if my experience grows with resin casting I'll do it again in the future. I think I need another set for another gt2 variant.

Over 2 years... but that was due to another big project, namely my house. I live(d) in a single floor bungalow and we decided to put another floor and roof on it. So now I actually live in a more standard house, with lots more space :D

Because of that major overhaul all my scale modeling stuff went into boxes and off to storage. Now, finaly, I can get back to some modeling again.

First up are the clear parts...

In the mean time, I closed the body. I'm waiting for the glue to dry, then back with some more pics.

Thx for waiting ;)

Looks good! Couple of things - the chassis base plate should be body-colored. And the bottoms of the side skirts should be black.

I'm not sure where you saw that the bottom had a different colour, but I can asure you that it is in fact in the body colour :)
The bottom half of side skirts should indeed be semi-gloss black. I'm not sure why I sprayed them silver... but that was 2 years ago. They have now been glued to the body so I will leave them, at least for now. Perhaps when I have to pull out my airbrush anyway, I will mask and spray it black.

Hopefully I can get around making some more good photo's, but for now... I'm gonna have a peek for my next project :smokin:
