2003 chevy malibu LS

Car has been over heating and no heat inside, I noticed that hose to heater core looks kinked, also when running there is a lot of steam coming out overflow. Could heater core hose be the problem? Also, does water continuously run thru heater core even when heater controls are off? Was thinking of bypassing heater core to see if car still over heats.
