New to the board......a couple of questions...

Hey guys...new to this board.

My 99 GT is having AC problems. First the fan is whining when making a left turn. It just squeals really loud. Any one know what this is or how to fix?

Next thing...this morning on my way to work, the floor on the passenger side was flooded with water. This has happended before, but never consistently, it only used to happen on really hot days, and when I was driving a long ways (200+ miles), but never on a short trip like this. Last time this happened there was over an inch of standing water on the floor.

Anyone have any ideas???

Haven't had problems with the HVAC in my GP but had problems similar to the ones you describe with my Bonneville. My fan would wourk intermittantly. When it did work it sometimes only ran at one speed. Sometimes it made a ton of noise. Ended up replacing it with a new motor. Never had the problem after that. I'm not sure what turning right or left with the car would have to do with anything.

As for the water in the floor...sounds like the condensation drain may be clogged.

Where is the condesation drain located at???

I'll see if I can find a diagram. Again, not that familiar with the specifics on the GP as I've had mine less than a year, but typically located on the passenger side of the firewall. When you park your car after driving with the AC, notice the trickle of water from under the car. The water is coming from this drain.

Are you the first or only owner of this vehicle?/Do you remember bottoming out, or driving over rocks or anything like that?

Yeah....I bought it brand new in November of 99.

I can only remember one time that I hit anything really hard...I wouldn't consider it bottoming out i guess. I hit a pot hole on the edge of a hwy going about 70.....didn't seem to do any damage though.....

as far as rocks...I mean gravel or white rock roads every once in a while....nothing larger than that though......

What cause mine was my air conditioner over flow plug was blocked then causeing the air conditioner unit to fill up with water and the only place for the water to run was back into the car filling up my passenger floor. I'm not sure if your overflow plug will be in the same place as mine but mine is very tricky to find. Along the firewall infront of the passenger seat (under the hood) there is an elbow drain plug coming off the firewall that slides right off. Mine was full of dirt which blocked of the water running out from air conditioner. Hope it helps let me know?

was it raining? do you have a sunroof?

scrubin -- No sunroof......and it wasn't raining this morning....but I have had problems with the rain before.....but had the dealer seal that problem when the car was still under warranty.

i would check out you power steering pump, your belt and the tension arm for the belt, probaly not the problem, but eliminate these then go on to the ac unit and its fan

Here is the bulletin from GM about the Evaporator Drain, as it is a fairly common problem.

Condition
Some customers may comment that the carpet on the front passenger side is wet.

Cause
This may be caused by foreign material plugging the evaporator case drain.

Correction
Inspect the evaporator case drain for plugging.

Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
Remove the rubber elbow from the evaporator case drain tube by pulling the elbow straight off.
Insert a 9 mm (11/32 in) drill bit, or any other similar-type instrument, into the evaporator case drain to clean out the material that is blocking the drain. (The distance to the other side of the evaporator case is 130 mm (5 in)).
Re-install the evaporator case drain rubber elbow. A small amount of silicone spray on the inside of the rubber tube will allow it to be slipped into place very easily. Be sure that the rubber elbow drain hole is open.
If the evaporator case drain was not plugged, a water leak test will need to be performed using normal water testing procedures.

If no external water leak was found and the vehicle returns for the same type concern, the evaporator case will have to be removed from the vehicle and the foreign material removed from the evaporator case.

Checked the Evaporator Drain plug....clogged up....just as you all said. Drained over a half a gallon of water out of there.....

My 2000 Grand Prix has also had the same problem with the A/C drain getting clogged and flooding the floorboard twice in the last 6 months.

I took it into the Pontiac dealership today to get the clog removed and the serve technician told me that this is very common with the Grand Prix as the drain opening is quite small compared to many other cars, he even recomended that I may want to enlarge it. I asked him to show me where the drain was so I could keep an eye on it myself. When I got home with the car tonight I removed the drain to inspect it, the tech was right, the drain tapers down to about a 1/4 inch opening so I snipped the tapered end off with scissors.

Hopefully my flooded floorboard days are over.
