63 corvette steering damper

okay guys i have a question,maybe someone can help me on this,on a 63 corvette steering,how come the 340hp 327's didn't come with the steering damper,the lower horsepower cars did come with one.Maybe i dont understand what this damper does,maybe someone could tell me what the damper is for,maybe the higher horsepower cars didn't need one,or something,it just seems like the 340 horse cars would have one and 300 horse and lower horsepower wouldn't,but they do and mine doesn't,i thought i would put one on mine,but dont know if i need it or not,if someone could put some light at the end of the tunnel for me maybe i could see(LOL).......thanks for all your help...........jason

Ok I'm pullin this out of my A**! But I'm guessing that they didn't put a damper on the higher HP Vettes because the dampening may have taken away from the road feel. That's why most muscle cars came with manual steering. Also a weight savings. Again, this is only a guess...
