Have a 1997 Ford Escort that the check engine light stays on, when I took it for emission ispection, they said the code was 1443, I then took it to an auto parts store, and they can't find any codes, they reset the light and it came back on the next day, does anyone know what the 1443 code is. thank you for any help. What do you mean by the gas cap; is something on tyhe gas tank or on the engine(in which place).

The gas cap itself, told the seal on it must have been broke, If you dont have a good seal the check engine light will come on. Gene

I had this code once before, a vacum leak could also cause this code, I traced all the vacum lines and found that the entire Charcoal canister filter for the gas fumes had fallen off the car.(located in front left fender area below headlight) I got one from a junk yard and replaced it and that solved my problem. Its been over a year or so but now I have the code back again. When I did the repair I also replaced two small black emmision elec valves located on the vacum lines coming from the canister. I will check the gas cap but if anyone else has suggestions feel free to chime in.
