04 Grand Am key won't turn

hey all. Daughter's 04 Grand Am 3800 was running fine until this morning and now the key will not turn the ignition at all. Searched the threads and found too many possible causes and all the threads were for older Grand Ams. So, is there just one ot two possible reasons/solutions for this? Steering wheel turns back and forth, gear lever moves when we hold down the release button next to it, all fuses and electrical seem fine. But the key refuses to turn. Pins? Solenoid? Spray the ignition? Tap the key? HIT the key? What is the order to try fixes? Appreciate any info/help.

Have you tried a second key? It may be just worn out. Maybe jiggle the key somewhat.

Grand Am's do not have 3800 engines....
If the key will absolutely not turn at all(can insert and remove key), then as Blue sax says, do you have a second key? If you don't, go to a locksmith or to a GM dealer that can cut you a new key(not expensive, Passlock keys are just blank keys....no resistors or transponders in them), based on the VIN number of your vehicle(you need to be able to show vehicle ownership)......you can't just get a new key by tracing it, because you may be copying the problem...
If you do have a second key, and it still doesn't turn, then you need to bring the car to a GM dealership.....you have a tumbler problem.......since the key will not turn, the dealership has to drill out the locking spring of the PassLock sensor, to remove the sensor and the lock cylinder from the ignition switch....then you need a new cylinder and PassLock sensor AND, the lock cylinder has to be coded to the key.....and the Passlock system has to be reset....it will be costly...

Ive had GA's that do the same thing. what ever you do dont force it it will trip the security feature adn you'll have to do the system relearn which take 15 mins.
if you dont have another key try jiggling the one you have or turning it over, key works either way.
also make sure its in park. the brake shift interrupt can also do this, which their should be something in this forum to test/check this.

after rereading your post Bluesax, the steering wheel does not lock in this car.
Second the shifter should NOT move with the ignition off!!
So this tells me its prob the brake/shift interrupt switch in the console with the shifter.
theirs a cable that goes to the ignition switch, also wired to the brake pedal, that unlocks the shifter when the key in in the ON possition, and your foots on the brake.
also check the fuse for this BSI.
