What should my friend do?

Ok this is for my friend. He just bought himself act xtreme clutch with act 12 lb flywheel for his 2000 ex. Well my boy got done installing it but before he went to go buy the clutch he heard a lound knocking noise. We thought it was no biggie cause we knew that the throw out bearing was pretty bad. Anyways everything is all done but it continues to knock. HE thinks its the valves but i said its too loud to be a bent valve. So it ended up that he has a bad rod bearing:frown: We went to this local perf. to see how much they'll fix it and they quoted us "2500" SO he was pretty stressed out about this so we all suggested that he should swap in a gsr motor. What do you guys think he should do? Fix it or swap ?

Could be a bad rod bearing, hard to tell without hearing it myself. But 2500 for rod bearings?!? I dunno but that seems a little (lot) high, rod bearings aren't that hard to fix.

Well if u gonna replace it u gonna have to replace everything and re balance the crankshaft. He spun the bearing. If i had the tools i would do it for him but i dont.

Oh ok, it wasn't just worn then, makes a little more sense. Then I would say the answer depends on what condition his existing engine is in, and if it is modded at all. If the engine is rough anyways, this may be a sign to replace it.

if you spin a bearing you scare the crank and the rod. either get a new rod or get it turned down with oversized bearings. and the same for the crank . a crank is 300 with all new bearings including mains, i know cause i spun a bearing before, anyhow a rod is 40 some odd dollaes . so will all new parts its about 400 , 2100 is alot for labor.

Yeh i know thats way cheaper if we do it on our own but then again i dont have tools to do it for him. My other boys dont even have time to do this for him. I think its quicker if we just dropped in a motor for him.

Hell no man. Stay away from b16s. LOL. For real if hes gonna swap in a b16 then mind as well call his car an si and si's are really slow. I told him if he wants that car to move go 1.8. B16a is non obd anways. There would be some wiring conversion to do this properly.

Yeh thats what stresses him out. He doesn't understand how this could happen. He has dc header , iceman cai and thermal exhaust. I asked him if he ever sucked in water he said no. HE said it just started makin that noise on there way to pick up there clutch a few days ago. He hasn't beaten on it really bad also and he hasn't beat on it for a long time since his throw out bearing is bad.:dunno:

No oil?

Wouldnt the car be under warranty? It could be a defect, but highly unlikely.

nah he had oil. When we drained it ...it was only 2 quarts that came out though. But yeh he always do an oil change. This just happen. The oil was black. I figured he might've mis shifted? Poor guy. He was so happy that he finally got his cluct and flywheel and this had to happen..:frown:

2500 is a SHITLOAD of money!! for that price you could go buy a bunch of ctr pistons, rods, cams, etc. and not only fix the prob, but have a much faster car too.

Well no not really. Cause he has the sohc v-tec and if hes gonna swap it he wont have enough to get those mods u mentioned:smile: Anyways we talked about his other option. HE was gonna order srp pistons on stock compression along with eagle rods and new bearings. Then he said he'll have enough for turbo. Thats another good idea i guess.
