Hi All I'm really exited about the following news....since it seems quite reliable and definitive.
BMW should be bringing a new BMW 1 Series here in North America (Canada included lol), between 2004 and 2006. THE CAR IS REAR WHEEL DRIVE! keeping with Bmw's sporty tradition and is a unique feature in this class. More importantly...the car should be priced around 25000$ (canadian) (about the same as a Honda Civic SIR) allowing it to compete with upscale compact cars like Ford Focus, Volkswagen Golf, Acura 1.7EL etc. The engines offered should be 1.6L 1.8L 2L (gas engines). Possibly a 2L diesel might be offered. There will definitively be a M version of the 1 series due for a later introduction. Rumours range from a 2L turbo engine developping 220 hp to a 2.4L naturaly aspired engine develloping 250 hp.
It also seems like Mercedes will also be bringing it's A class over to canada to retail around 28000$. It's a front wheel drive.
I've also seen posts indicating that Audi will also be bringing it's A3 and S3 over to canada.
This is very exiting for people with limited budgets who wish to drive a superior car like a bmw. Could you please bring some light to these arguments by either confirming what I said or by correcting me. Could it be possible to make a category for the 1 series in the forum also.
Thanks for your help.

Hmm would rock if there was a car (brand new) that would cost <20k $CDN with tax and all, but was better then a Honda Civic SiR (Si in US? B16 engine). ah well ;) We'll see. I hope to see some pics :) Where did you get your news from? I knew of the various new series from BMW to come out from various sources including some ppl who worked at BMW dealerships and also knew ppl who worked for BMW.. but the pics ive seen were mostly sketches and concepts.. hmm

deutschauto thanks for the info, but the price you quoted is not correct. The 1er will be priced above the new mini Cooper and below the the E46. The new mini here starts at $25,000CAN and the S model starts at $29,950. The 3er starts at $34,900 so this would make the 1er range from about maybe $28,000 - $35,000.

Maybe I'm being overly optimistic....but many sources like the following
http://www.webwombat.com.au/motoring/news_reports/bmw1.htm
allow me to make the reasonable assumption that the bmw 1-series might sell for as little as 25 000$ canadian in base trim (if there is such a thing for a bmw).

Canadian BMW CEO said that the 1 series which has been confirmed by Munich, his words not mine. We all know it was coming. He didn't confirm any prices, since BMW usually gives out prices close to sell dates, but he said it would cost more than the mini cooper, but less than the 3 series.

Yes, BMW is definitely coming out with the 1-Series. I believe it will come out next year sometime.
Although, I would be surprised if they introduced a 1-Series Coupe. I was fairly certain they would all be hatchbacks. I'm also 99% sure there will be no 4-door 1-Series.
I am looking forward to its debut. This car is going to blow away the competition. I just hope BMW keeps its weight down, that way it will undoubtedly cream the competition. If BMW drops in a 6-cylinder engine in the M1 they will have quite an awesome car!

The 1 series will get a 4 door sedan version, but there are no spy pics to confirm this. So far only 2 versions have been spotted, the 3 and 5 door hatches. A M1 version will be made with an expected 220hp-240hp.

The Boffins at M headquarters are capable of producing a 100hp/litre engine so a double Vanos I4 would show some sceptics the've still got what it takes to compete in that sector...beat honda at their own game if they gave 250hp from a N/A 2 litre 4 pot!!That would be a real 'M' car

The bodystyles considered for the 1-series are:
3-door hatch
5-door hatch
2-door coupe
2-door coupe "M"
4-seat cabriolet
2-seat roadster
5-door touring
the ones i think will happen are - 3& 5 door hatch; 2dr coupe & M version, either 4seat cabrio OR 2 seat roadster, and i dont think they'll bother with the 5-door touring
