Cracking Decals

I have noticed a lot of the decals on the models I made 5-10 years are beginning to crack and separate badly. Mainly the decals on Tamiya kits. These were finished before I started clearcoating the decals.
Is it lack of clearcoating that is doing this or natural decal shrinkage or exposure to the sun that is doing this. Does anyone else get this?
