Yes because the cover is behind the pulley so the only way to get the cover off is to take off the pulley first.
Do yourself a favor. The crank pulley bolt is the #1 hardest to get off bolt because it is on with 119ft-lbs and it also spins when you turn it. Don't waste money on stupid specialty tools. Either have a shop zap the bolt off with an impact wrench and put it on tight enough to drive home, or buy yourself an impact wrench. Compress + Impact = Best $400 I ever spent, it practically pays for itself.

take out your #1 spark plug, make sure the cylinder is at Bottom Dead Center (BDC). Fill the entire cylinder up with a length of nylon rope (clothes line). this will hold the engine still. then take a big breaker bar and crank the bolt off. it works everytime for me like that.

please keep in mind the motor is currently OUT of the car.

If the motor is out your probably going to tip the motor over if you try using a big breaker bar or something. Use an impact.

OK..im really considering this because i really need to get my crank pulley off...but...isnt this alot of strain on parts..

it works great. the nylon is soft enough not to scratch the cylinder, and it is hard enough not to compress.
