My son's 2005 Ford Focus defroster,heat,etc blows only out the front vents and not out the top,at the windshield, or the bottom, the footwell. This started recently and must be repaired for cold weather...HELP

Same happened on my kid's 2004. The selector knob is stuck in the front dash vent position blowing forward and won't turn to select the defrost vents or any of the other selections, like floorboard. It is stuck. Feels like a jambed cable. Think it requires removing the radio? Is it accessible from just removing the lower dash panel?
