What do you think computers will be like in the future?
Here are my ideas
-CPU: The CPU will be big (more transistors means more space).
-RAM: Computers will have RAM up the wazoo, but no HD's, because everything is stored into the much faster RAM. Sort of like palm-top computers, which only have RAM (But that's because they can't fit HD's, but you get the idea).
-Disk drive: Only one, possibly a small disc will be used, although, maybe in the future, every computer is in a world wide network, and discs will not be needed to trade data. If there are discs, they will probably be like mini-cd's, doing away with magnetic types.
-Video card: GeForce 911 Turbo ;) Can display 1048576 bit color, at a very high unknown resolution.
-Sound card: Nothing super advanced, just plays super high quality sound, and is fully 3D/surround.
-Monitor: This will be a half bubble that covers your desktop. You are inside of it. Everything appears 3D, this is really good for games! :D
-OS: Windows 2057 will be used. It will cripple the computers, slowing them down tremedously, making them unstable, and require frequent software patching.:D

I'll go a step farther... anytime heard of optical data storage in small cristals. I read once an article in Scientific America a cristal (artifical) in the size of a peanut holding hundreds of GByte.

Processing- while I think multiprocessing will carry us for a long while, eventually new technology here should still develop. First up IMO could be 3 dimensional processors, which of course have more area for circuits yet less distance between them. Think of it as a cubic processor (this is already being worked on). 2 dimensions are terribly inefficient at housing matter, 3 works much better. Also, since transistor size is reaching a point to where they just can't get any smaller (lest they cease to function), it's time to utilize space more efficiently.
Data storage- Solid state technology will carry us through for a good long time, but it will definitely be gone once we figure out a solid light based design for storing data. Current optical technology has too many moving parts, which places barriers on both speed and cost of production. Solid state is mechanically efficient and very fast, but lacks the ability to store data without continous electrical supply and is super expensive to produce. Future engineers will look to get rid of as many moving parts as possible, as many precision parts as possible, and all hard circuitry. Possibly this will come in the two photon multiple layer idea (or a holographic approach), with a non-moving optical disc or polymer based cube (again, three dimensional technology), with one laser (emmiting two distinct beam harmonics) writing data in three dimensional substrate, and another exiting any point in the cube so it can be read. Video: Will be setup for use with HDTV's, as the 1080p video standard will be plenty good for any type of display. As the HDTVs become the standard in TV design, and all of them are capable of supporting the 1080p standard (that's 1080 lines of resolution, displayed progressively instead of interlaced), there will be no reason for our current monitors. Otherwise LCD screens will be used, since flat panel design will pick up where tube is leaving off. Ultimately I expect to see true flat panel, high density and high brightness displays that weigh under 50 pounds even at wall filling size. And since computers will become the center peice of home entertainment, this is the only idea that makes long term sense. Have a whole wall capable of being a display, and section it out for different tasks as you see fit. The children can use the computer 6 feet away from your viewing area while you watch your favorite broadband, internet carried sitcoms.
Audio: As further advancements are being made in electrostatic speakers, expect them to largely supplant current cone speakers. Due to their better off-axis response and far superior space and weight considerations, these will be in the homes of future generations. Imagine having 4 ft tall electrostatics with a flush mounting depth about equivalent to drywall, mounted in any wall or ceiling area you so desire.
Interface: Though the mouse and keyboard work perfectly fine right now, as wireless technologies and computer based home entertainment systems gain market share, these items will feel extremely clunky sitting in your living room. While there's no true replacement for them, look for remote control and voice activated controls to become more the standard. As touch screen LCD remotes become smaller and better, figure they will become portable displays, virtual keyboards and track pads, and a host of other waiting to be thought of ideas (maybe video phones too, and make those cellular or satelite based while you're at it). Take it with you when you go out, bring it home and control a variety of things within your home. Basically these should be more like super flexible personal organizers than anything else, and will likely be your most prized and personal digital property. Integration is the key: one object should take the place of several that came before it, while also being more ergonomic, intuitive to use, and supremely portable.

Right now, computers double in speed every six months, within five years that time will shorten but still remain. It won't be so that a new one comes out every five seconds but it may get down to a weekly thing. They will also double in everything we currently know. We've broken the Gigahertz barrier a while ago and soon we'll be well past 10 Gz.

I wish I could say yes to that. You see, about 3 months ago I started ordering new parts for a new computer. Unfortunately, it still doesn't work. First I had CPU problems, then HD problems, then power supply problems, now I just found out I have a shitty mobo. I've been trying to get it to work for about 2 months. I was never able to play CS, and I'm not going to bother on the computer I'm still using because it was just too slow. :(

I think you're thinking about it all wrong. You're taking current emerging trends and technologies and merely making them faster. I don't think many of the components we know today will be around for much longer. Although I do agree about worldwide broadband.

I personally think that faster isn't necessarily better... Sure it's nice, but we as humans can only go so quickly. Having computers that are x^nth power faster than our brains can even compute information is useless b/c we can't use the info until we've thought of what to do next.
I think reforms are more in the works of improving data storage and such as opposed to speeding things up. I don't know... I'm not in a thinking mood anymore. I'll probably post back later.

nono, i think you miss the point tangie, it IS good to have computers that are n^th power faster then our brains (they already are enyway) because they can proccess MONSTROUS amounts of data quickly. I mean, take todays typical cimputer, 1.2 gigs, lets say 512 megs of ram,20 gigs of HD space (im just pulling these outta my ass cause i have an ooooonld computer) and yet this computer STILL takes 10 minutes to prccess a complicated 3d boolean CAD image. Engineers want the computer to be able to crunch the numbers almost instantly, and get the image right away. you see what i mean? Its not a question of what could we think of for these blindingly fast comptuers to do, its to put them to work at their full capacity. a supercomputer used to track the pattern of the universe probably wouldnt be too good for your own use tangie, casue you'll be barely tapping its recourses, sorta like grampy's driving the big V8 boats around. But for tracking the pattern of the universe, the computer is working at 100%, you know what i mean?

My point wasn't in that kind of speed... not calculating speed, but rather speed of operations, I guess you'd call it...
I mean, we can only think so fast as to what we want the computer to do... having them go any faster would mean they'd have to do what we wanted before we knew we wanted it.
