Wax and BMF

Should Bare Metal Foil be applied before or after waxing? Will BMF (or trim paint, or anything else) stick on a waxed surface? I just finished polishing out my Tamiya Porsche 996, using about six coats of X22 acrylic clear. Came out incredible! Absolutely mirrorlike- my first completely perfect finish. (Sorry, no pics yet. Need to get me a digital camera). I'm never going back to spray cans! I'm going to use Zymol wax (same stuff I use on the 1/1 M3).

I just BMF'ed over my waxed camaro and it was fine. But of course it might depend on the wax you use. Zymol is caranuba based, while Tamiya wax is some synthetic formulation, so in any likeness, you are better off to BMF before waxing just to be safe.

Are you sure Zymol is compatable with Tamiya clear?
Not all automotive waxes are good to use on model cars.....

I would apply BMF before I apply the wax, that is how I did it on the Camaro I just finished.

Apparently Zymol is "made of the purest organic ingredients such as brazilian caranuba wax, jojoba flower, rhinobee oil, etc". I've heard it works well on model cars, just as long as the paint has had proper time to cure before you apply it.

Hmm, good point. I probably should test compatibility first. (Jeez, you'd think I'd learn. I once polished out a car with Novus2, and then when I swithced to Novus1, was horrified to watch it eat the Future I had used to clearcoat. Damnit!)

I figured Tamiya wax was a carnuba formulation. Wonder if it works apreciably different/better. It would be entirely like Tamiya to specially formulate their wax to work with their paint (their compound seems to work better on their paint than Novus does). But those silly little tubes of wax are expensive....

and can someone explain the wax, so you, primer a car, base it, put some clears...than wax it with some car wax? (i would be using mothers carnuba if thats how its done).

I've realize over the past several months that one of the best ways to get great looking BMF trim is to make sure that the areas it's being applied to are super smooth. The smoother the 'trim' area is, the better the BMF will look when finished.

That said, I've built one kit where I polished and waxed the model before applying the BMF. It turned out better than anything else I've ever tried. I had no problems with the foil sticking to the finish.

I'd recommend doing BMF after you polish/wax. You might want to give it one more wax at the very end, but that would be up to you.
