Hey fellow car nuts! Well the time to trade in my trusty old VC commodore is approaching. Some time next year i will be getting my new car whick will almost deffinatly be a Skyline.

I'll have around $15 - 20 K to spend (thats $AU) so im pretty much torn between the R32 and the R33. Where i live that kinda money will get u something like an R32 GTS or GTS-t with modifications or a fairly un touched R33 (sports exaust, turbo thats about it). What i was wondering was which you all think would be a better by for me. Because im pooring as much money as i can into it i need something that will be quick and just as importantly, reliable. Im willing to sacrifice speed for better reliability but i still want something quick! :) So if you guys and gals could give me some advice on what u think would be a better choice for me i'd really appreciate it.
thanks for your time,
Aaron

Hey mate,
i was in the same boat about 5 months ago. With about the same amount of money to spend too.

I imported an R33 gts-t that was in excellent condition.
It had lotsa HKS stuff, (exhaust, intercooler, pod filter) and engine and interior were VERY good. Interior looked almost new.
It has a GTR bodykit and a double rear wing in silver.

So yeah i got one that is in very good condition, looks really good, and pisses all over the V8's!!!!
All up it was a little over 20k, (about 20.5k i think)

So i suggest an R33 gts-t.

Good luck,

Andrew.

ps, if u want a pic just ask.

Hey Ethan_R33, thanks very much for your advice! I would love to see a pic of your car! Sounds like a nice car and you got it for a good price too. I saw a skyline for sale on the side of the road. It was an R33 GTS25t. Pretty standard. Looked as though it had only just been imported cause the japanese rego stickers were still on it :). Thing about it was that it was a 3 SPEED auto and the speedo went up to only 180 km/h??

Yeah no probs mate.
When i get home from work tonight ill post a few pics of it, because i dont have any at work now sorry.

A 3 speed auto???? never heard of that.
And all R33's (and nearly all other skylines) have speedos that only go to 180, and are also speed limited at 180 too :(
Fortunately you can buy speedos that go up to 320, and also remove the speed limiter too. :sun:

are u guys serious that cars cost that much over in auzzy? that sucks man, over here u can get a R32 GTS for 5-6 grand and a R32 GTR for under 20 grand!!cant u import one from over here or something? surely it must be cheaper!

yeah but isnt that in Kiwi dollars????

Theres no way youd even get an R32 gts-t here for under 10,000 australian dollars. I think you pretty much double the kiwi dollar to get one australian dollar.

siiiigh, what id give to be able to drive around and see a skyline for sale on teh side of the road. Damn Japan for keeping all the good cars out of the US.

yeah it is in kiwi dollars so that means that auzzy's car prices are even MORE expensive than if the currency was worth the same as australia. if aussy dollars were worth twice kiwi dollars, (which theyre not) u could get R32 GTS for $3000 AU and a GTR for $10000 AU, now do u realise how crap ur car prices are over there?

i have seen one advertised privately, i think it was in the trade and exchange about a month ago, dont know what the condition was like, maybe it was crap cause most are around $25-26000

nah mate youve got it all wrong.
If i had 1 ozzie dollar and put it in kiwi dollars id only get about half a kiwi dollar.
So if a car costs about 10k there, its about 18-20k here. Theres NO WAY u could even get a non turbo skyline here for under 10k.
The ozzie dollar is actually pretty good now, its about $.50 the US dollar. So the kiwi dollar is about $.25 a US dollar.

U get me now?????
Sorry about the confusion.......

ethan, you're right and ur wrong

i know theres no way u could get a R32 GTST for under $10,000 BUT this is got not much to do with the rating of ur auzzy dollar, its cause u guys have crap tariffs that go on all imported cars to australia. if the government wanted to they could take the import tariffs away and cars would be almost instantly cheaper.

now, as to the fact of comparing NZ $ to AU $.

cause ur currency is worth more than ours u can buy more for $1 AU

so if u have $1 AU u convert it to get $2 NZ NOT $0.50 NZ like u said before.

so if a car costs $5000 it should theoretically cost $2500 in aussy, (assuming $1NZ = $0.5AU which isnt correct) the only reason why it costs heaps more is cause of the tariffs ur govt put on imported cars.

NOW i hope everything is cleared up!haha

Are you sure they haven't "forgotten" to include the word "body kit"?

I've been suckered into one of those "GTR"s before - it's even a R33... saw the ad on Auto Trader and rang the dealer - he quickly said it's not the Real McCoy :p

nah it was real, just not in perfect condition, still good tho, theres heaps of R32 gtr's selling in the $25-26000 mark here in NZ

good point slip, the exchange rate is much closer than some people thought.
