In-progress project #2: VW Golf Mk3 GTi -Pics-

Hi,

I'm a bit bored with my In-progress project #1, my teardrops trailer.
It take all my time and I don't see the end, I don't know why I began such a pharaonic work :confused: So, I'll only work on the trailer at the club and do something else at home.

I've finished my golf Mk4, then it's now time to begin the Mk3.
It's "Back to the future" :D

The kit is the Fujimi Golf Cox 420si

Modifications done/to do:
- rims: Aoshima Equip 5 spokes
- front bumper: Tamiya Celica 4WD Castrol (very old kit)
- rear bumper: Tamiya Skyline R34 V-spec
- mirrors: Tamiya Mitsubishi Evo WRC
- side-skirts: Lexus GS300 (resin parts)
- seats: Tamiya Skyline R34 V-spec

The celica bumper has been cut in 3 parts and some styrene has been added. This styrene will be the base for the putty.

The skyline bumper is glued and I have put a first coat of epoxy putty to join the two parts.

You can also see on the pics that the mirrors are in place and I've begun the interior.

First I thought to make a CF-hood but it won't be good with the colour I plan. Top secret color, I'll receive it in august :wink:

Also what I didn't mentioned in the "to do" list is to fill the rear plate and add the stock wing.

Some progress pics.

The different parts of the front bumper are now filed with epoxy putty (Tamiya).
Mirrors are in place, I had to redo the mirror mount to fit the Golf door. If you remember I'm usign mirrors from a Mitsubishi EvoV WRC.

I also took the intercooler from a Skyline to fill the big "mouth" of the bumper.

When you will read this, sideskirts have been modified/shortened to fit the Golf chassis and 75% of the putty has been sanded.

Is it a great difference between the 2 kits, GTi and VR6?

As I told you before, I had a Golf Mk3 VR6 ( the 2.9l, 4WD, 194 Hp) and I'd like to build the same as mine.
It's Fujimi so there is no engine but did they put a fake VR6 engine with it?

your 420.si doesnt have an engine??? it is only a mock you dont build the whole thing but the vr6 has an engine, same ideas as the cox but it looks liek the vr6. as for the difference fujimi is cheap as we all know and it is the exat same model but ith different decals and the different motor

i like it. i like german cars a lot and an mk3 is a car i've been thnnking about for a while. so i am kind of fond of this one.. drawn to it. i like the idea, let's soo how well it is output. keep it up

fujoimi makes it, if you get the cox complete car it comes ithe the 2.slo and if you get the golf vr6 version it comes with the well vr6

It will be painted in Alclad "Prismatic Maple Copper Red to Greens " . It's a changing color. It changes in the sun. It's like a chameleon color.

You guys should come look and see how many bad ass tuned golfs like that are zooming around here in belgium. It's unbelievable. All those young guys buy a golf and almost half of them get into tuning.

No, I've never bought Alclad online. I buy it in shows, a shop from Brussels have a stand in most belgian shows and I buy it there.

I'm still in the sanding stage of all the modifications :banghead:
There is soooo much to sand :crying:

In a week or two the body will be ready to paint.
About paint, I've bought the bottle of Alclad Prismatic, I'm so excited to try it.

I've also thought how to add more details inside. I've decided to redo the door panels (great lack of details), to completely cover the dashboard with CF (the details of the dashboard are horrible) and create an Hi-Fi instalation in the trunk.

I hope more pics shortly.

I'm bringing this thread back from the dark depth of AF as I want to keep my promises 'Don't start a new kit before finishing the others already started'.
So, still this one and an MkII and I can start a recently bought kit :grinyes:

Nothing has changed since 2004, already 3 years :uhoh: , but I'll keep the pressure to finish it in less than 3 month. First step, finish the chassis, new pics soon :naughty:

So, after all the promises I made, I'm resurecting this 8 years old thread.

I MUST finish my old projects before I start a new one. There are soooooo many kits in my closet I want to start but I can't if these are not done.

Now that my skills have improved, that I have my own working place, that I have more tools and accessories I can really get the result I always wanted.

About the project itself I'll keep the main modifications but will do 2 colors rims with border in Alclad and center in some dark color (gunmetal, gloss black? Still don't know). Body won't be painted in Alclad prismatic but in maroon brown. I got a Vr6 (mock-up) engine and will replace the Gti with it.
Dashboard and center console in CF, flocked floor, ...


And, now I'll stop talking and go back to work, it's already back on the workbench... :biggrin:

My work, these last days, was to sand all the putty (I had covered all the transformations with putty before storing it) and to rescribe the panel lines. I primerd it to see the last flaws , there are still some little holes to fill and it will be ready for paint.

I also improved the backseat with headrests from an Audi 90 which have the same shape as the stock Mk3. I had to sand the cushions because it had some kind of rough surface.

There was nothing yesterday evening on Tv so I worked a bit on the engine. I received it from a friend who had painted it, I stripped it with oven cleaner. It didn't remove the silver paints but I'll sand them before painting. I only scratchbuilt a 'strut bar' (Is that the right word :confused:), simple but effective. I don't plan heavy modifications on the engine: only a few wires and hoses.

Engine done and ready to be screwed to the chassis and inserted into the body.
Modifications:
- plastic protection coming between the windscreen and the engine with it's clear window the read the chassis # (it will be glued once body's on)
- shock heads reworked
- heat shielding done with cigarette paper
- scratchbuilt expansion tank
- sparkplug cables
- CF engine cover
- battery clamps and cables
- main hoses

The strut barre still needs to be painted with Alclad and placed above.

The engine looks really good, you can't tell that its only one piece. Subtle detailing really adds a lot to it. Good luck and maybe this build will give me some inspiration to start building again. :thumbsup:
