I've only been interested in imports/modifiying for a few months, and I still don't understand compression ratios. Can someone please explain?

take 10.5:1
the first number is the amount the cylinder volume that is compressed
so the cylinder volume is compressed 10.5 times the amount of when the pistion is all the way at the bottom

good compression ratio?
it counts on what car you have (all cars have a certain CR) and what you are planning to do with your car... lower compression ratios for FI'd (forced induction) cars (most of time at least), and higher than stock for NA (naturally aspirated) cars... anyways i dont wanna explain too much and get into detail... check this out if you have some time for a lot more info... great explanation and site...
