1990 e-250 6 cyl no start buzzing only

Hi
I have a 1990 work van, 6 cyl. efi and over the last 2 days it has hesitated just slightly before starting which I thought sounded like a low battery but since it started ignored it like a fool who has too much to do to have a broken van....:banghead:
I tried to start it this morning but all I get is a a grinding buzzing noise from under the hood.
The lights are strong, wipers work etc.
The starter makes no noise and is only about 3 years old.
Help.
