Thoughts on changing trans fluid

07 GM, 62,000 miles

Local dealer changes oil, get every 5th one free, said trans fluid was a little dark and should be changed , $200.00 I declined for the moment.
Also said brake and power steering fluid were a little dark but no suggestions on this.

Some people argue that changing trans fluid will create problems, that they will never do it again.

Need suggestions from you pros.

Brake fluid and power steering fluid are not something I would change in the first 100K for the ordinary average family vehicle, even though every dealer owner's manual probably recommends this and like services prematurely. The dealer recommendations are for optimal conditions and are more precautionary rather than reactionary.

However, when it comes to the tranny, I tend to aire on the side of precautionary because if the fluid get's dark/burnt and it affects vehicle shifting, then it might be too late. Changing tranny fluid after the fact, when it is already bad or waiting too long, can likewise result in loss of function altogether or debris becoming unlodged by the change and hindering operation of the small trans valves. So changing the trans fluid now, @ 62K, although sooner than expected, is beneficial in the long run. Having dark/burnt fluid and running up the miles, can prove very costly. I'm not saying you have to run out tomorrow and get it changed, but if the fluid is showing sign of wear and tear, then it might be good preventative maintenance to attend to that detail this year. Changes like this, can save you big money in the long run because trannys are not cheap. Just my :2cents:. Good luck.

You can change the fluid and filter at that mileage and be OK. The gasket is reusable, 4 quarts of fluid and a filter. It is a very DIY issue if you have the place to do it. If a little plastic piece falls out, that is OK It is a installment plug on the bottom of the dipstick tube.

Thanks guys, I think I can handle this and save most of the $200.00 the dealer wanted. There is no drain plug on the trans, right? Just drop the pan and let the fluid flow !!!
