About Primer

So I was using Tamiya primer spray, but when I buy LHS, it cost over $10 and it's small and hate paying more. What happen if I just buy from home depot or lowes that is cheaper and bigger to save money. Will it be the same from Tamiya or different?

Completely different formulation, not that buying the right primer won't work, different brand and type of primers will be different.
I've successfully used Krylon primer before without issue, it just goes on heavier if you're not careful.

So Krylon primer is tougher than tamiya?

I get my primer from Walmart, labeled as Colour Place here in Canada cost about $3-$4 bucks a can and is about 3xs the size of Tamiya's large can. It's abit darker grey then Tamiya's light grey and abit heavy when applied but the cost differential is too good to pass up. I also buy my base colours from Walmart, I use the Krylon indoor/outdoor paint, costs about $4 a can and is often on sale for 2 for $5ish. I use black/flat white/flat flat aluminium and the clear and have had no issues as of yet with these paints reacting badly, even with Tamiya sprays. Only issue I had was two cans of glass black coming out like a mixture of flat/gloss. I contacted Krylon an they sent me 2 replacement cans as well as an extra can. Now I still use Tamiya paint for the specific colours that match particular race cars etc, but using the paint from Walmart saves a lot of money on the commonly used colours.

I only use the Tamiya primer as a final finish primer, applied before I paint. If I'm just checking my prep work, filling, sanding marks etc, I just use a cheap grey primer from Halfords (UK, auto store) A large can of that is really inexpensive and lasts ages. I wouldn't use it as my top coat primer as it's a bit grainy. But for 'roughing out' and checking my work it's great. Doing it this way keeps the costs down on the Tamiya primer as I use nowhere near as much..

Hmm tough choice about primer. The colour place don't have here near my store. Only carry krylon paint.

Sorry, my fault, in Canada we use British English spelling for words like colour/flavour, etc. Its the same product just relabeled for sale north of the border.

Like Steve stated its, this is a heavier and thicker primer then Tamiya's fine, but a lot cheaper, especially if you are using it for checking work prior to final paint.

If you are in the US you can use this. It's what I have used for years. spays on nicely. They even have a primer sealer which sands easily and thus helps in getting a nice glossy finish.

On the other hand, if you use urathane paint, all you would wouldnt need primer. You would use adhesion promoter. Unless you used body filler of course.

I've used duplicolor primer with good results in the past. But its laquer based so check scrap pieces first with paint. I love the tamiya primer i think its worth it lasts me for 2-4 bodies

Avd, if you have a Hobby Lobby in your area, you might want to take a trip to one of the stores, they just started selling Tamiya Primer, and with the 40% off coupon, its a great deal, I just bought a can today from Hobby Lobby and after the coupon , I paid $7 and change

Did that before, but can still small. I want something that is really big and stop going store everytime to buy

I use Duplicolor primer when I intend to use a hot paint, like another Duplicolor or touch up paint through an airbrush. I use Tamiya primer for just about everything. I use it on bodies if I am going to use TS for the body. I use it on pretty much all other parts, too, since I use TS on most of everything.

Remember, Tamiya primer is intended for plastic models. It won't react with the plastic, like can happen with Duplicolor and other hotter paints. It and TS sprays are docile, and easy to work with, too. I'm not saying Tamiya is always best for everything, I go through a LOT of cans of Duplicolor, too, but it is pretty good stuff, goes on super smooth, dries quickly, and work really well for hobbyists.

I had been building for years before I saw this page: http://www.tamiya.com/english/scale/beginner2/2.htm and it was an eye opener. Watch the video, it really changed my rattle can paint jobs for the better when I saw how close and fast they move the can. Made a world of difference.

Tamiya primer is expensive, but there's nothingg like it.

Mr hobby primer is also in the same league. Not that cheaper primer won't do the job, but it's just not as good.

I like Mr Hobby primer better then I do Tamiya to be honest, it is more, but if you find the right sellers online, its not that much more

Yeah but last time I was there, I printed like 6 coupon and see if Hobby Lobby would do multi times but I was wrong. So pretty must if I buy more than one item, I can only use one coupon per customer which is sucks.

I'd rather just pay $11 at my LHS, honestly. That extra $4 per can means that when I go there, I might find some NOS of solid black and solid gold decal paper instead of an Out Of Business sign like was in front of the hobby shop they bought said decal paper (and loads of other weird, cool supplies) from.

Yeah, but I keep thinking that if I go 2 different places and I just wasting gas make no since at all.
