My 2002 lincoln ls v8 140k miles doesnt move when put into
reverse or drive5 or even d4,3,2,1 , it just starts to roll
back/forward when taken out of park. It has the gear selector
with d5,d4,3,2,1 not the select shift. I was told needs new
transmission, but before it stoped moving completely it was
still driveable second slipped at lower speeds(mostly when
looking for parking or in traffic). I had made an appiointment to
bring my car to the shop and the same day is when it stoped
moving. All this happen withn a week during the week i
constantly got an e where d5 was and on last day check engine
light came on. I just want a second opinion what someone might
think it can be. Any help/advice is/would be highly appreciated.

It's probably not in need of a completely new/different transmission, but rather an issue with the fluid (condition or level), the pump, or valve body.
And I'd like you to confirm that the car does not roll when in park. If the will roll in park, then the issue may be as simple as a broken u-joint or driveshaft issue.

I would agree that it is probably something as simple as being low on fluid or having a bad solenoid assembly, if you hadn't been driving it while it was slipping. I do suspect that you have destroyed your transmission.

Also see http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=1065882 ,it could be a bad plastic shifting block, or a loose shifting cable.
