Hi guys i'm lookin for a compressor with tank in aus and was hoping some of you aussies can point me in the right direction as i'm having trouble finding a supplier. I dont want car compresors i want small silent hobby comp and i already have a regulator and water trap. I have to buy one as i was using the spare tyre method but one of my spares exploded and blew a bloody big hole through my wall. I now do not recommend the spare tyre.
Regards Bob.

when i was after a compressor i grabbed a holdings with a tank. NOT happy with it as when the tank filled up and i started spraying it started up and kept on running now its not as silent as i thought. so i got rid of it and brought a small 2.5hp 20ltr tank comp from repco yes it is a small automotive type but i can spray a whole kit before it starst back up and its not that much louder than the holding one. and if you want to reduce the noise is to build a box around it with a hole for the intake.and it only cost $170.00 over $375.00 for the holdings

Thanks guys i have been offered the holdings one for about 400.00 but now i'm not sure. Have also found 3 others that all look the same, green with tank under, these have been priced at 289.00 at three differrent hobby stores on the net but they dont say what brand. The other prob is i only can work in my house so really need small one, but i'll pop down to the local mitre 10 and check out there 2.5hp range and see how loud they are. Regards Bob.

i also work from inside the house with the 2.5 comp and its not so bad. and i,m going to build a box around it lined with styrafoam mainly for a bench on top and it will quietten it down a bit more and then i can paint at night. i also saw a smaller one at my local kb auto store and it was oilless had a tank and was nearly half the size of mine again for $199

If you're a 'handy' guy, I'd recommend building your own compressor from a refridgerator compressor. I got the idea and some basic directions from several different websites (don't have any links handy).

Basically you need a working fridge compressor (I got mine from an appliance repair place for $10 and it was pretty old, but it worked), a holding tank of some sort (lots of hardware stores sell 5 or 10 gallon air tanks for $20-30), and your regular assortment of fittings including a regulator and water trap. You have to add oil to the compressor every so often so it doesn't dry out. If it does crap out on me, I'll just go get another one for $10 from the same place...

I've been using mine for about 5 years now and it hasn't let me down. I would guess the whole thing cost me about $50-60 and is almost dead silent when running.

Good luck with whatever you choose... If you're interested in more info on my setup, PM me and I'll help out as best I can.

Thanks guys for ya help, I found a 2.5hp with 20lt tank for 199.00 at mitre 10 its quiet enough to use in the house and has a motor which takes oil but this is better than one without and not so noisy. Once i fill the tank up just turn off and spray it could not be easier. i now wonder why i even bothered lookin for a hobby one they just to bloody dear and you still get noise where as i can run the big one for 5 min and srpay all day. Cheers. Bob:D
