I don't know much about this car, as it has just been introduced in the US. Does it have a history. I have always wondered about the Daewoo. They look pretty cool. :D

In the 80's, Daewoo made the small Pontiac LeMans sedan sold in north america. It was based on an old Opel (GM) design. More recently they have been out on their own and doing well in the market. However, the company is bankrupt, and has stopped production because suppliers will not deliver parts they may not get paid for. Until we see whether this company survives, it may be a risk buying one, as service, and the long warranty could just end.

Although currently bankrupt, they will probably be picked up by Ford or GM.

Ford cut off talks and GM will too, as with general auto sales downturn, nobody needs this company. Jan 3 company announced expected sales decline for 2001 at about 35%. This company is not long for this world. I'll bet some dealers start closing soon.

Actually, Daewoo IS still bankrupt. GM is working on signing a deal to buy a major share of the company, but nothing has been signed yet and it will still be in bad shape even after the deal goes through (assuming it will).

I hope this clears up things for ya, since this doc. is from May 2001 all the agreements have been done.

General Motors Takeover of Daewoo Motor Reported as Imminent

11 May 2001

The Board of General Motors has approved the takeover of Daewoo Motor, according to news agency and Korean media reports. General Motors is expected to make a formal proposal as early as next week and a formal agreement could be reached as early as mid June.

As recently announced to a group of Australian journalists by J.D. Lee, Chairman of Daewoo Motor, the company has recently prepared the groundwork for a return to operating profit for the current calendar year. Indeed the recent announcement of its first operating profits in April after nearly three years has been cited as a major factor for the improvement in the company's prospects.

Despite the weakness of the local currency, Daewoo Automotive Australia remains one of the most successful overseas affiliates and no change is expected to Daewoo's operations in Australia at this stage

All agreements have NOT been done. GM has yet to sign the papers taking over Daewoo. The actual agreement, if it ever gets signed, would put Daewoo under the control of a new company, co-owned by GM, Daewoo's creditors, and another company (either Fiat, Subaru, Suzuki, or Isuzu). Nobody is making this entire process easy, though. The unions controlling the Korean plants continue to ask for concessions including the re-hiring of laid-off workers. GM has also stated that the deal only includes two of Daewoo's Korean plants (the largest plant in Pupyong isn't included) and two of Daewoo's non-Korean plants (Vietnam and Egypt, which eliminates their plants in Poland and Uzbekistan, among other places).
