04 2.2 cav P0422 error

in Canada we used to be able to do emmisions with tailpipe test, now new its a ODB 2 emission test if non of the daily drive cycle tests complete and pass your car doesn't pass even though it can pass tail pipe its cash grab.

but I got this error on my 2004 cav P0422 small leak evaporator leak or what not where do I look whats most common thing as I need to fix this, this week as sunday my sticker runs out. What would I look for what could it be

I know last year the top of the engine this plastic canister with a green cap broke but I repaired it with 2 part epoxy. So where do I look what would it be

This is a small leak......the obvious try is a new gas cap......clear the code, and see if it returns......

If it does and there are no discernible cracks, holes, or openings, the only way to find this leak is with a smoke test.......this will require going to a shop with a smoke machine and a scanner capable of sealing the system...

it happens every so often like last week I cleared the codes takes a week of driving for the error to pop up. so didn't think its gas cap but I can recheck

how can I check the lines myself I was going to use a fog machine or wat about a vacuum gauge etc

cuz I sure this smoke test isn't cheap

what broke with green cap.....this is the test port for evap system with a schrader valve.maybe that is leaking.after you clear code it may take time for enabling criteria to be met to run the evap monitor then the light will come on.on youtube people are shown using homemade smoke machines.party stores sell fog machines.its best to use a inert gas like nitrogen or co2 that when mixed with gas vapors would not risk a fire if a spark happened.I broke down and bought a smoke machine doing a lot of evap codes......finds leaks fast.with a good scan tool monitoring the gas tank pressure sensor in graph form and closing sealing system engerzing the vent solenoid to close and using smoke it is easy to pinpoint leak.they also use ultrasonic leak detectors.take some very soapy water arount the test port with green cap and see if bubbles.maybe schrader leaking.....look at all your lines in evap system.they make gas cap testers but none of the auto parts stores in my area have one they just sell you a new gas cap and blame the code on that....you could take that chance.

The test can be run at any GM shop....to hook up the machine and scan tool, put on lift and look for smoke, should take less than an hour....so the max cost should be one hour's labor....they can show you what is leaking, so you can replace it yourself...

ill take a pic of what broke, also why do you need a monitor and a tool to change the solinodes on off so much for making it cheap lol ya I was going to get a fog machine so was going to make it myself and put it in a line

ill try to send a pic shorty what broke, and ya here in Canada parts stores don't sell nothing lol but I seen a video where he bought a cap and drilled a hole in it and screwed it to a hose to the fog machine

but what scan tool did u use? all I have is the one scantool Candian Tire sells and the HP Tunners laptop version

it wotn let me upload the pic but its not broken at the green port but it clips on to the valve or so as it has wiring under neath

i dont have a vacume gauge to screw on it figured my vacume gauges for ac would screw on nope lol but ill try trhe soapy option

so i did soap but didnt see no sucking it in or nothing
but i do hear hissing but that could be part of engine or so

but that module that that green port plugs onto whats it called as its a quick connect for the green port and the relay valve has 2 wires pink and green

so what one is that i might just try replacing that too maybe its plugged a bit inside with epoxy not sure but gonna try a fog machine first

Comet, quit "Mickey Mousing"....call local GM shops for lowest labor rate....they will show you where the smoke is coming out under pressure.....easy peezy lemon squeezy....fix it....go get your sticker....

I assume your have tried a new cap.....also where the rubber seal on the cap mates with the fill tube, is that fill tube contact area rusty? If yes, clean it....

130 bucks at the gm dealer located near me to have it tested

its cheaper to micky mouse it 80 bucks for a sticker 40 bucks for emissions on top of parts ill need and 130 bucks like frig

might as well bend over lol

i couldnt be bothered to fix this little leak that takes a week to pop up

but because there is no such thing as a tail pipe emmission test anymore

the emmission test only takes 30 seconds they plug into the odb port and if all trip cycles say complete you pass, if some arent complete they tell u drive a couple more days come back and re take the test what not

so I found the problem the purge valve had hole in it, and took a while to reset

as for Canada your allowed 2008 1 and newer codes malfunctioning and older cars 2

problem is you have to have 0 incomplete codes if it has to do with emmissions.

which makes no sens and if you have a Evap that is incomplete or fails its an autom atic failure for your car

plus when they tell you at the garage to drive it a couple days and come back you need to pay again for the emmssion scan to be done. takes all of 5 min so its best to get urself a scan tool if the scan tool pass's all the monitors ur good to go if not don't bother going to garage try to fix urself

sorry I joining the 2 when I ment the monitors I ment the codes also

I ment the monitors said all complete now

but if you goto the garage for a emission and some monitors are not complete but are in the incomplete, you are forced to pay the first emission then drive your car a couple days and retest and repay. if the monitors still not complete you need to re drive car for couple days and repay the emission test again.

so lucky I repaired the solinode and ran the diagnostic steps for the evap 3 times and she tripped to complete.

total money grab as all cars are passing emmissions so ppl not spending more on the drive clean this now a catch for them as if the monitors are not set to complete mode you gotta re pay
