Stuck 2008 Acadia 2nd section sunshade

The motorized sunshade for the 2nd row is fully retracted and won't open. I can hear the motor running, but nothing happens. This is a new car for me, so I have no idea how long it has been like this. The owner's manual says that attempting to open it manually can "damage the unit" which may be what happened. (And why anyone would build one of these things within reach of kids that couldn't be manually opened and closed without breaking is beyond me.) Any ideas on what's wrong and if it's something my husband and I can fix ourselves (very car savvy)?
