Depends on what you are towing. Do you have a tranny cooler?

I read in the past the normal operating temp not towing should be between 175 to 200 degrees. The towing temp should be less than 230 degrees. At 300 degrees the fluid breaks down and then the trouble starts.

the fluid temp should be 190 to 160 deg f. if when you tow and see the fluid temp above 210 deg f you need a larger external fluid cooler.

I'm towing a 5,000 lb boat in 90 degree weather and saw my trans temp went up to 205. While traveling through death valley (not towing) my trans temp hit 192 degrees. Not sure if I have a transmission cooler. How can I tell if I do?

I believe you do have one. the factory install cooler is on the small side.
follow the tranny lines to the front of vehicle and see if they go to a fluid cooler in front of the AC condenser coils.
the temps you have are normal and in the proper range. using synthetic fluid will reduce temps and also is able to take the heat better and not turn to acid.
all my vehicles I installed mobil synthetic transmission fluid .make sure you use the proper fluid for your transmission as the 2006 on up use the dexronVI tranny fluid GM spec....
